Second Sunday of Advent

Also Read: Mass Readings for 07 December 2025

First Reading: Isaiah 11: 1-10

They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. (9-10)

Prophet Isaiah prophesies about the expected Saviour, about seven centuries before Christ’s birth. His description of the Messiah is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The peaceful kingdom foretold about is ruled over by the Messiah Lord!

On this the second Sunday of advent we too join Isaiah in joyful expectation of our Lord Jesus’ second coming; even as we commemorate his humble yet wondrous incarnation 2000 years ago! Come, Lord Jesus Come! Amen, Alleluia!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 72: 1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17

Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king’s son. May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. (1-2)

Amen, Alleluia!

Second Reading: Romans 15: 4-9

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (4-6)

St. Paul proclaims how we are united into one family through Jesus Christ Our Lord! The Old Testament has been fulfilled in Christ Jesus, and we are the people of the New Testament. Let us with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Alleluia: Luke 3: 4, 6

Alleluia, Alleluia! As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. And all people will see God’s salvation.’” Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 3: 1-12

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’” (1-3)

Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. (6)

“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” (8)

Prophet Isaiah proclaimed about John the Baptist too, the forerunner of Christ Jesus! We are blessed to have the scriptures revealed to us through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. We thank the Lord for the inspired word of the scriptures.

John baptized them after they had confessed their sins and had repented. Then John reminds them that they need to act/or conduct themselves in alignment with their repented hearts! Once we repent and are baptized we are no longer the old self, living in sin! We must show by our lives that we have the holy spirit of God dwelling in us! In great or small daily activities, we must live in the integrity of heart.

“I will study the way that is blameless. When shall I attain it? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is base. (Ps. 101: 2-3)

In Jesus’ name, Amen!
