Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 12 October 2025

First Reading: Second Kings 5: 14-17

Then Naaman said, “If not, please let two mule-loads of earth be given to your servant; for your servant will no longer offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god except the Lord. (17)

In this very interesting episode about the Leprous Naaman we see how he is transformed into a believer. Prophet Elisha asks the mighty commander of the Aramean army to immerse himself in the Jordan! In humility, Naaman follows the prophet’s word and is healed and cleansed! His depth of conversion is seen in his reverence as he requests for some of the earth from where he was healed. Let us learn from Naaman to follow the Lord’s instructions in humility.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 98: 1-4

O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory. (1) Amen, Alleluia!

Second Reading: Second Timothy 2: 8-13

The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. (11-13)

St. Paul reminds us that the Lord God guides, leads and protects us always. Even though we may fall back on our promise to God, God does not abandon us! He is faithful even when we are not faithful! We thank the Lord for his great mercy on us. Thank you, Lord, Alleluia, Amen!

Alleluia: First Thessalonians 5: 18

Alleluia, Alleluia! Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 17: 11-19

When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. (14)

The outsiders or the strangers are being acknowledged in the Reading and the Gospel today—Naaman and the Samaritan! Jesus took a look at them and spoke out their healing. They even promptly obeyed his word. But what happens after that? They fail to express their gratitude or show their faith. The faith of both these men is applauded here today. But also their gratitude attitude is praised by God!

Let us learn humility and gratitude from today’s readings, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
