Is leaving the Catholic Church a Sin?

Is leaving the one true Catholic Church considered as “SIN against the holy spirit”?

Indeed it is!

Jesus said, “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the sin against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Furthermore, whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matthew 12: 22-32).

A simple understanding of this matter is what we call “Renunciation of Faith.” For example, a Catholic leaves his/her faith what does it mean? It suggests that he/she will no longer believe in the traditional doctrine of the church. He will no longer partake in the Eucharist which is our heavenly food that nourishes our soul. He will no longer believe in the symbolism of the cross, he will refuse to receive the sacraments. The sad thing is that he will never again attend the Holy Eucharist which is the highest form of Worship long before and was practiced in the apostolic era. These are just some of the sad realities if one would leave the church.

That’s why the church has a dictum called “EXTRA ECCLESIAM NULLA SALUS” which means “There is no Salvation outside the Church.” But before reacting to the said decree we must need to understand that it doesn’t mean only Catholics will be saved, it does not mean that if you are a Catholic, you are saved already. Though it pertains to those baptized members of the Catholic church who chose to reject their faith, and they detached everything from the faith. This assertion reminds us that salvation is not possible for those who died in these state having a failure to reconcile themselves from the church.

I do understand that Religion or being a baptized member of the church is not an assurance of salvation because we will be judged according to our works but don’t forget that the church was established by our Lord God Jesus Christ to be our way to obtain salvation. Apostasy was a grave offense against God because that act means disobedience in the earthly authority established by God that’s why Jesus highlighted in Matthew 12: 22-32 that, the Sin against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable.

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. (Hebrews 13: 17)

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven(Matthew 16: 19)

Question: when is the time that we can say sin is unforgivable?
Answer: If a person dies on the stage of unrepentance and having a failure to reconcile himself to the True Church of Christ. FINAL IMPENITENCE! In fact, salvation is offered to all whether you are born a Protestant or a Catholic as our God is God of all. Those essentials merited by Protestants in their salvation is because of the essential elements from the Catholic Church and not from themselves or from their sect. What we’re trying to say here is the distinct closure of salvation to those apostate ones especially those heretics who aim to destroy the one True Church.

I am inviting you to go back to the Catholic Church. God is merciful! Confession is biblical, don’t be afraid.

  • I am a cradle Catholic…chosen for me not by me. I have always been in Religion Crisis over this topic…not, Faith Crisis. Here’s the big crisis issue for me…since, I really have no plans to go around Mortally sinning….such as murder for example… I need help with missing Mass. Catholics have Mass Obligation.
Missing Mass=Mortal Sin. Mortal Sin=straight to Hell. Only Catholics have Mass. So, logic follows that only Catholics without Mortal Sin of missing Mass can get into Heaven. But, Protestants/Jews, etc… do not have Mass Obligation or Mortal Sin. Does the Catholic Church say no one but the best behaved Catholics can go to Heaven? Pretty sure they don’t. So, isn’t my soul safer NOT being Catholic? Why can’t I stop being Catholic without having to worry about going to HELL???
I’m completely serious…I resent being held to a higher standard than Lutherans when it comes to going to Heaven, I also resent having to defend being Catholic due to the Church’s blatant hypocrisy regarding abuse. Not to mention the insanity now occurring in The US since Trump had destroyed our democracy in the name of religion.

  • Wow reading the comments of the 3 heretics that left the true faith is hard to take. I also left the faith to become Protestant and leaving the church felt so real so new so great. I was worshiping with true lovers of the word (or so I thought). The pastor would say show me in the Bible if it’s not in the Bible don’t believe it. Only believe what is in the Bible.
Years later and 3 or 4 churches later cause that’s what Protestants do jump around from church to church if the pastor says something you don’t agree with. Well the Protestants teach that the truth will set you free cause the Bible says it. One day I read in the Bible that Jesus establish one faith, one religion and one baptism. I asked my pastor and he said that the first religion that Jesus established was corrupted by the Roman emperor in the years 300 or so.
Ok. Sounds good I’ll trust my pastor. Then I read in the Bible were Jesus said you are Peter and in you I will build my church and what ever you bind on earth will be binding in heaven. And in you I will build my church and all the powers of hell will never destroy it
Pastor it’s in the Bible and Jesus said these words are you saying that Jesus is a liar. Then I read in so many parts of the Bible to hold on to the teachings of the church not to move away from they’re teaching. I read that the apostles truly believed that if you left the church you committed the sin of heresy. The apostles truly believed you sin if you walked away from the faith the apostles proclaimed because the faith they proclaimed was the faith Jesus left us. The pastors had no answer only to follow the Protestant faith. Then why do you Protestants say the Bible alone. Show me where it says it on the Bible and I will believe it. Here it is pastor. Well no it doesn’t really mean that it’s only a metaphor. Pastor it says here never call anyone father yes that’s right never call anyone father so don’t call a priest father the Bible forbids it. Pastor why do you believe that? Cause it’s in the Bible. Ok
You are Peter and I will give you the keys no, no, no don’t believe that Jesus never gave him the keys.
Pastor you are a hypocrite you believe what you want to believe. If you’re going to take that approach then believe everything that written in the Bible don’t pick and choose. I found out that the Protestants does not have the fullness of the faith. Protestants pick and choose like a buffet the pick and choose to make the Bible say what they want it to say. And after further research I found out that the church that Jesus started is still here on earth and that church is the Catholic faith.
Wow so Jesus meant what he said and said what he meant. Uhhh go figure, who knew? Ohh wait a minute the Catholics new. I obeyed the Bible and came back to the one true faith. The Bible alone. Yes the Bible alone made me come back to the church and now I truly follow every word of the Bible. Wow who would ever imagine that the Catholics are the only ones that follow and keep the true teachings of Jesus.

  • Why would anyone want to "go back to the catholic church"? The church has absolutely and totally discredited itself. I'm 69 years old and I left the church a long time ago and never looked back. And by the way, there is no "one true church". That idea is childish unenlightened nonsense. I despise the catholic church. The way it uses and leverages guilt in order to maintain power over the people is despicable. Jesus would have been appalled at the RCC. He would have walked in and overturned the tables of the hypocrites just like he did 2000 years ago.

  • So what your saying is that The Holy Spirit is the Catholic Church quoted from your article, “EXTRA ECCLESIAM NULLA SALUS” which means “There is no Salvation outside the Church". First of all, I write this with love, because it does not matter what I think is true, it matters what the Bible says. You are correct that in Matthew 12:31-32, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is an unforgiven sin although this does not pertain to a man made doctrine, building or law. The church that The Bible talks about is the body of Christ. Read John 2:19-21, Jesus was talking about His body when rebuilding the temple in three days. Read 1Cor 3:16, "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you." Read 1Cor 6:19 "Or do you not know that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own." Read Heb 8:2 "A Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected and not a man."

As a Christian, not a Catholic, Methodist, Baptist or any other Christian label, we must follow the God Head and not man head and that is Christ at the center and head of the church. I pray that you look further into the Catholic cannon laws which in many ways contradict biblical doctrine. A good and probably the best is cannon law 331 which states that the pope is the vicar of Christ on earth meaning that the pope is the representation of Christ on earth. This is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit because the Bible states in John 14:15-18 "If you love Me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper , that may abide with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells within you and will be with you." The vicar of Christ on earth after Christ ascended, meaning the representation is the Holy Spirit. Those that receive the Holy Spirit in which the Spirit lives, are ambassadors of Christ on earth.

Please do not be blinded to the truth, John 8:31 says "If you abide in My Word, you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free." Please do not be blinded by tradition, read the Bible for what it is, do further research into how the Catholic Church started, look at the thousands of man made cannon laws they added in-order to be part of their church, ask about the vicar of Christ, ask about worship of angels and saints, read the Bible about salvation through Christ alone and not through Mary or any other person, read your history about Constantine and how Rome mixed paganism with Christianity to make up the Catholic church, read about confessions of sins through a priest or any man when we have the perfect and only one High Priest in heaven that sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for us, what does the Bible say about baptism, read about why Catholics baptize infants and most importantly, do not harden your heart to Gods word because you may be afraid to find out the truth that a religion you and your family may have been following for years is blinded and not after the will of God which is souls.

We cannot be lazy when it comes to The Word of God. Hos 4:6 " My people are destroyed from their lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as priest; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children." Do not trust in anything but weigh it out for the truth by the statutes of the Bible which God has given to us for direction through faith that it is the truth.
2Tim 3:16-17 "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work."

I say this with love and not to compare myself better than any other person that may agree or disagree. I pray that this may be a blessing for every person that may read this comment and that God may move to change our hearts so that we may know the truth in this mixed up world. Ask and you shall receive and if you really want to know the truth, its in The Word. Study it, pray and be watchful or else you will be surprised and fooled at the end.
