Second Sunday of Lent
Also Read: Mass Readings for 01 March 2026
First Reading: Genesis 12: 1-4a
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. “
To put things into perspective here, Abram lived in a world very different from ours today! There were no pictures/information of faraway lands. There were no immigration consultants or brochures for reference! There was no precedent! No one else around Abram had done before, what God commanded him to do – leave his country and settle in an unknown place. But Abram did as the Lord God commanded and that required very deep faith. Abram would have developed that faith because of the strong relationship he had nurtured with God!
Let us learn from the Father of Faith, how we must develop our faith. Let us nourish our bond with our God through a constant dialogue with him! Let us rebuild habits of speaking with the Lord first every morning. Let us return our minds to the Lord every time, especially when we are the most distracted or disturbed! Let us speak the Lord’s words of Promise over our lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 33: 4-5, 18-20, 22
Truly, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. (18-19)
Alleluia, Amen!
Second Reading: Second Timothy 1: 8b-10
Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began. (8-10)
We must remember that we have received a holy calling as mentioned here by St. Paul. Before the ages began, we were called and not on our own merit, but by the saving grace of Christ Jesus. Therefore, we will rejoice and be glad in Christ!
We will put on the whole armour of God (Eph 6:10-20) and walk in the Lord’s grace and purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Verse Before the Gospel: Matthew 17: 5
While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”
Praise and Glory to you O Lord God!
Gospel: Matthew 17: 1-9
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (4-5)
Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. (7-8)
On witnessing his Master and Lord Jesus Christ transfigured in glorious form; St. Peter exclaimed in his excitement about the three tents! The disciples would have loved to live there atop the mountain in the transfigured glory of the Lord! Yet as God reveals the truth to them, they respond with reverence! Imagine if we were to find out suddenly that a close friend of ours, (who is quite down to earth) is actually a real life Prince/ Princess! What would be our reaction? How would we respond to this personality in our lives who interacts with us in a simple, unassuming manner?
How much more then, should we cherish our bond with the King of the Universe, Christ the King?
Jesus’ response to Peter’s seemingly out of place request is full of only love and no rebuke or reprimand! “He came and touched them!” (7) The Lord comes to us where we are and touches us where we need him the most! We Thank the Lord and ask him to grant us the spirit to remain open to his love, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
