Lenten Preparation – Day 1: Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our sacred Lenten journey, a season of repentance, renewal, prayer, fasting, and charity. As ashes are placed upon our foreheads, we hear the solemn reminder: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

These words are not meant to discourage us. They remind us of our dependence on God and the urgency of conversion. Lent is not about guilt. It is about grace. It is God’s loving invitation to return to Him with our whole heart.

Today, as we begin this journey, we ask the Lord for a sincere spirit of repentance and a fresh beginning.

Bible Verse of the Day

“Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” — Mark 1:15

A Prayer of Repentance and Beginning

Merciful Father,
today I begin this sacred journey of Lent with a humble heart.
I come before You aware of my weakness,
aware that without You, I am dust and ashes.
Yet I thank You, Lord, because You love me even in my brokenness.

I confess my sins to You, O God.
I am sorry for the times I have failed to love,
for the moments I ignored Your voice,
and for choosing my will over Yours.
Wash me clean with Your mercy
and restore the joy of Your salvation within me.

Create in me a clean heart, O Lord.
Remove anything that separates me from You.
Teach me to walk again in obedience, humility, and faith.
As I fast, pray, and sacrifice during this Lent,
may it not be empty actions,
but a true turning of my heart toward You.

Jesus, lead me into the desert with You,
so that I may learn to depend only on God.
Strengthen me when I am weak.
Guide me when I feel lost.
Let this Lent be a new beginning,
a season of healing, renewal, and grace.

I place my life, my family, and this Lenten journey in Your hands.
Transform me, Lord,
so that I may rise with You at Easter
as a new creation.

Amen.

Reflection

Ash Wednesday reminds us that life is fragile, but God’s mercy is everlasting. The ashes on our foreheads symbolize humility, repentance, and our desire to begin again.

True conversion is not about outward appearance. It is about interior change. God does not seek empty rituals. He desires transformed hearts.

This Lent, ask yourself:

  • Where do I need to grow spiritually?
  • What habits are keeping me away from God?
  • How can I love Christ more faithfully?

The journey begins today.

Today’s Lenten Resolution

  • Spend at least 10 minutes in silent prayer.
  • Examine your conscience honestly.
  • Choose one concrete sacrifice for this Lent.
  • Offer your Lenten practices out of love, not obligation.

A Short Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father,
On this Ash Wednesday, I return to You with all my heart.
I am dust and depend entirely on Your mercy.
Forgive my sins and cleanse me.
Help me begin this Lent with humility, prayer, and love.
Draw me closer to You each day.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
