Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Also Read: Mass Readings for 18 January 2026
First Reading: Isaiah 49: 3, 5-6
In the First Reading, the prophet Isaiah reveals God’s saving plan through His chosen servant, formed from the womb and called to reveal the Lord’s glory. The servant belongs entirely to God and draws strength from Him, carrying out a mission rooted in obedience and trust.
The Lord makes it clear that this mission is not limited to restoring Israel alone. His servant is made a light to the nations so that God’s salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the true Servant of the Father, whose saving work is offered to all people.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 40: 2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10
The Responsorial Psalm speaks of patient trust in the Lord who hears the cry of His servant and places a new song of praise upon his lips. It is a song born from faith and gratitude for God’s saving action.
The psalmist proclaims that God desires not sacrifices alone, but ears open to obedience. To do the will of God is a delight, and His law is written within the heart. Proclaiming God’s justice before the assembly becomes a joyful expression of faith and commitment.
Second Reading: First Corinthians 1: 1-3
Saint Paul reminds us that we are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy. This calling unites all believers as one Church, gathered in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through Christ, grace and peace are given to us from God our Father. These gifts strengthen us to live according to our Christian vocation and to bear witness to the holiness we have received.
Gospel: John 1: 29-34
In the Gospel, John the Baptist bears clear witness to Jesus, proclaiming Him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Jesus is revealed as the One who existed before all, sent by the Father for the salvation of humanity.
John testifies that the Holy Spirit descended and remained upon Jesus, revealing Him as the Son of God. Jesus is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, offering new life and drawing all people into communion with God.
As we reflect on today’s readings, we are invited to recognize Jesus as the Lamb of God and to respond with faithful obedience. May we offer our lives to do God’s will and become witnesses of Christ’s light, so that His salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Amen. Alleluia!
