Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Also Read: Mass Readings for 08 February 2026
First Reading: Isaiah 58: 7-10
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house?
When you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? (7)
In the chapter today, Prophet Isaiah counters the false worship of the Israelites. He counters them in the way that they fast but refuse to be merciful to those around them. He emphasizes the fact that fasting must be accompanied by acts of mercy, without which their fasting is not acceptable to the Lord. Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? (5)
The Prophet tells us that when we quarrel or keep a gloomy countenance, our fasting and prayers are futile. Let us keep the fasting and be merciful to those in need by our words and deeds.
In Jesus’ name, Amen Alleluia!
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 112: 4-9
They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. (4, 5)
Alleluia, Amen!
Second Reading: First Corinthians 2: 1-5
And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. (3-5)
St. Paul bears witness to his reliance on the spirit of God and his power to work through him. Though being a scholar of great repute, he admits that his words were not his own. So that our faith might rest on the power of God. (5)
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Alleluia: John 8: 12
Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (16)
Our Lord Jesus Christ is asking us to be the Light and the Salt to the world! He has granted us the potential to be his witnesses, just like St. Paul! We must remember that we can be the Light to the upright, but also be vigilant to safeguard ourselves! In Jesus’ name, Amen!
