The Commandments Old and New!
If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. (15)
Through research, we learn that the book of Sirach was probably written in about 196–175 BC by a Jewish sage named Yeshua ben Sira. It is a compilation and translation of his work into Greek, by his grandson. Faced with invasions and attacks from different cultures, the Jewish people were under pressure to conform to the encroaching ruling powers. In such times, this book may have served students to learn traditional Jewish piety and wisdom. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ’s “Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew 6 & 7, e.g: “Not babbling in prayer” Sirach 7:14; seem to be reflections of the teachings in Sirach.
“It was (The Lord) he who created humankind in the beginning, and he left them in the power of their own free choice.” (14) This verse is self-explanatory. Humans have been allotted free choice, being created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we have choices to make every moment of our life. The choices we make lead us to eternal life or death! We ask the Lord for his Holy Spirit to guide us in making our daily choices. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34
The Glories of God’s Law
Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart. (1-2)
Alleluia, Amen!
Second Reading: First Corinthians 2: 6-10
Revelation by The Holy Spirit
But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. (9-10)
We have been granted the gift of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord. We praise and thank God for this blessing. We can rely on the Holy Spirit to help us make the right choices daily. We are blessed with beatific visions and an understanding far beyond our human capability when we listen to the promptings of the Divine Third Person. The Spirit searches everything. Therefore, when we are alert to His voice we can be sure to be saved! We must read and remain in the Word of God, daily! His word is our source of redemption.
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Alleluia: Matthew 11: 25
Alleluia, Alleluia! At that time, Jesus said: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants.” Alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 5: 17-37
Following Divine Revelation!
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.” (17-18)
Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us very clearly that we are to follow the Law, that is the Ten Commandments. He further reiterates the depth to which one must pursue righteousness in keeping the commandments as he explains them. Through His Word in The Old Testament and the New Testament, we are provided the way we must follow.
Let us ask the Lord to send us the Holy Spirit to guide us in His Light. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
