Come O Holy Spirit, come!
First Reading: Acts 2: 1-11
Effects of Pentecost!
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability. (4)
Today, as we commemorate the birth of the Holy Church, we are reminded of the power of the Holy Spirit. He came with “a sound like the rush of a violent wind” (v.2). We can imagine the bewilderment the people may have experienced. While the apostles’ hearts were set on fire, they would have felt a courageous mantle envelop their souls! In the midst of their fear, loss, and abandonment, in the worldly sense, they were renewed in their faith and the promises of Jesus Christ our Lord! The Holy Spirit filled the upper room with God’s power and love. The languages that the Apostles could speak immediately created a power around themselves – the power of God’s Love! Those outside the room felt the presence of God’s love and power; it couldn’t be hidden or stopped! With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, there descended on everyone a unity in God’s love!
Therefore, by the effect of God’s love around us, we shall know and see his powerful works! In the unity of brothers, in the harmony of sisters, in the faith of elders, and in the joy of children, God’s Holy Spirit is at work! Alleluia!
In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 104: 1, 24, 29-31, 34
When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works. (30-31)
Alleluia, Amen!
Second Reading: First Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13
God Dwells!
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” (12-13)
The Lord God of All, whose Holy Spirit formed the Holy Church, unites His People through that same Spirit! He baptized us and gave us a gift. This gift we ought to discover, hone, and use to glorify God! When all of us strive to live on the promises of Jesus Christ, we will see a great unity. Uniformity is not unity! We may be diverse in our perspectives, attire, cultures, or age; yet we will find that brotherly love can bind us together as God’s beloved children! Where there is peace and unity, we can surely know that the Holy Spirit is present there!
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Gospel: John 20: 19-23
God’s Power in His Love!
When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (23-23)
Jesus Christ instituted the sacrament of Reconciliation when he spoke these words! Amen! We thank the Lord for a great medium for our redemption. The Apostles went out on that first Pentecost Day and spread the love of God through the Holy Spirit. They shared their power as they had received! They healed and proclaimed the Gospel.
The Word of God has reached many people across the world. Yet, we also reflect on the way we could be sharers of the Great Commission (Mat. 28:19) in our world today! We have been blessed to be a blessing and share with others! We are to gaze deep into our own souls and reverently listen to the Lord, the Holy Spirit within us! We are guided daily in our mission when we submit to the Lord’s gentle promptings. When God has decided that we should be his instruments, we had better be prepared. Let us shine our brass, and blow our trumpets loud for Christ our Lord!
Let us pray to the Lord, Holy Trinity God, to bring about Unity in our Church, peace among ourselves, and joy in each other! Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we believe that what we ask for in prayer is granted. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
Happy Feast of Pentecost! Alleluia!
