First Reading: Wisdom 7: 22b – 8: 1

22 For in her is the spirit of understanding: holy, one, manifold, subtile, eloquent, active, undefiled, sure, sweet, loving that which is good, quick, which nothing hindereth, beneficent,

23 Gentle, kind, steadfast, assured, secure, having all power, overseeing all things, and containing all spirits, intelligible, pure, subtile.

24 For wisdom is more active than all active things: and reacheth everywhere by reason of her purity.

25 For she is a vapour of the power of God, and a certain pure emanation of the glory of the almighty God: and therefore no defiled thing cometh into her.

26 For she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of God’s majesty, and the image of his goodness.

27 And being but one, she can do all things: and remaining in herself the same, she reneweth all things, and through nations conveyeth herself into holy souls, she maketh the friends of God and prophets.

28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom.

29 For she is more beautiful than the sun, and above all the order of the stars: being compared with the light, she is found before it.

30 For after this cometh night, but no evil can overcome wisdom.

8:1 She reacheth therefore from end to end mightily, and ordereth all things sweetly.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 89, 90, 91, 130, 135, 175

R. (89a) Your word is for ever, O Lord.

89 LAMED. For ever, O Lord, thy word standeth firm in heaven.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

90 Thy truth unto all generations: thou hast founded the earth, and it continueth.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

91 By thy ordinance the day goeth on: for all things serve thee.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

130 The declaration of thy words giveth light: and giveth understanding to little ones.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and teach me thy justifications.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

175 My soul shall live and shall praise thee: and thy judgments shall help me.

R. Your word is for ever, O Lord.

Alleluia: John 15: 5

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

5 I am the vine, you are the branches, says the Lord: whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Luke 17: 20-25

20 And being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come? he answered them, and said: The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

21 Neither shall they say: Behold here, or behold there. For lo, the kingdom of God is within you.

22 And he said to his disciples: The days will come, when you shall desire to see one day of the Son of man; and you shall not see it.

23 And they will say to you: See here, and see there. Go ye not after, nor follow them:

24 For as the lightening that lighteneth from under heaven, shineth unto the parts that are under heaven, so shall the Son of man be in his day.

25 But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation.

Reflection

God’s wisdom is steady, pure, and active in the midst of a changing world. It reaches everywhere, orders all things with gentleness, and renews those who receive it. The psalm gives us the posture of such a disciple: to stand upon the enduring Word of God, asking that it give light and understanding.

Jesus teaches that the kingdom of God does not arrive through impressive signs that allow us to point and say, “There it is.” It is already present in him and among those who remain united to him. The image of the vine makes this concrete: life and fruitfulness come from abiding in Christ. This matters especially when voices promise certainty in one place or another, or when faithfulness becomes difficult. Jesus does not hide the fact that the Son of Man will suffer and be rejected, yet his kingdom is not defeated by this suffering. We do not need to chase every claim or spectacle. We can remain close to Christ, receive light from his Word, and let divine wisdom quietly order our choices. In that faithful communion, God’s kingdom takes root and bears fruit.

Prayer

Lord God, your Word stands forever and your wisdom reaches into every part of creation. Give me a humble heart that listens before it speaks and seeks your light before following uncertain voices. Keep me united to Jesus, the true vine, especially when discipleship brings difficulty or when your kingdom seems hidden. Let your wisdom purify my desires, guide my decisions, and make my life fruitful in love. Help me recognize your presence among your people and within the quiet obedience of each day. May I remain faithful to Christ, trusting that his kingdom cannot be overcome. Amen.
