5 Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him.

6 Add not any thing to his words, lest thou be reproved, and found a liar:

7 Two things I have asked of thee, deny them not to me before I die.

8 Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life:

9 Lest perhaps being filled, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God.

3 And he said to them: Take nothing for your journey; neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.

4 And whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there, and depart not from thence.

5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them.

6 And going out, they went about through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.

God’s word is tested and trustworthy: a shield for those who place their hope in him and a lamp that shows the next faithful step. The prayer of the first reading asks for a life kept clear of vanity, lies, excess, and desperate want. It seeks enough to remain dependent on God, neither so full that the heart forgets him nor so burdened that fear leads it into wrongdoing.

Jesus gives this same spirit to the apostles when he sends them out with almost nothing for the journey. Their authority does not rest on possessions or worldly security, but on the kingdom they proclaim, the healing they bring, and their reliance on God. The Gospel’s call to repent and believe begins here: allowing God’s word to correct our desires and simplify our hearts. We may not travel from town to town preaching, yet we carry Christ’s mission in ordinary encounters. A life shaped by Scripture, free from needless attachment, can make the Gospel credible. We serve more peacefully when we trust that God’s provision, rather than our abundance, is the foundation of our mission.

Faithful God, your word is a sure shield and a light for my path. Free me from vanity, deceit, and the restless desire for more than I need. Give me a heart content with your care, attentive to your commandments, and ready to repent when I wander. When you send me to serve, keep me from depending on recognition, possessions, or control. Make my life a quiet witness to the kingdom of God, and give me courage to offer healing, truth, and hope wherever I go. May I trust your providence and follow your word faithfully. Amen.
