Ordinary Weekday/ Ephrem of Syria, Deacon, Doctor
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 157, 160, 161, 165, 166, 168
Alleluia: John 14: 23
Gospel: Mark 12: 35-37
First Reading: Second Timothy 3: 10-17
10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience,
11 Persecutions, afflictions: such as came upon me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra: what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12 And all that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.
13 But evil men and seducers shall grow worse and worse: erring, and driving into error.
14 But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice,
17 That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work.

Gospel: Mark 12: 35-37
35 And Jesus answering, said, teaching in the temple: How do the scribes say, that Christ is the son of David?
36 For David himself saith by the Holy Ghost: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool.
37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord, and whence is he then his son? And a great multitude heard him gladly.
Reflection
Faithfulness becomes especially important when pressure, confusion, or opposition surround us. Paul tells Timothy to remain in what he has learned through the holy Scriptures, because God’s word teaches, corrects, and equips us for every good work. The psalm gives the same assurance: those who love God’s law possess a deep peace and do not easily stumble, even when persecuted. This peace is not the absence of difficulty; it is the steadiness that comes from being anchored in God’s truth.
That truth has its center in Jesus. In the temple, he leads his hearers beyond a limited understanding of the Messiah. David calls him “Lord,” revealing that Christ cannot be reduced to a merely human expectation. The Alleluia makes the response clear: love for Jesus is shown by keeping his word, and obedience opens the way for the Father’s presence. When faith is tested, we do not need to invent our own direction. We can return to Scripture, listen to Christ, and let his word correct and strengthen us. A life rooted there becomes ready for every good work, with peace that does not depend on the approval of others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are David’s Lord and the fulfillment of God’s saving word. Give me a faithful heart that remains rooted in Scripture when I face confusion, opposition, or temptation. Teach me to receive your word with humility, allowing it to correct my choices and form my life. Grant me the peace promised to those who love your law, a peace that keeps me from stumbling. May my love for you be shown in obedient action, and may your truth equip me to serve others with patience, courage, and goodness. Draw me into the Father’s presence and keep me faithful to the end. Amen.
