1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2 Which he had promised before, by his prophets, in the holy scriptures,
3 Concerning his Son, who was made to him of the seed of David, according to the flesh,
4 Who was predestinated the Son of God in power, according to the spirit of sanctification, by the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead;
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith, in all nations, for his name;
6 Among whom are you also the called of Jesus Christ:
7 To all that are at Rome, the beloved of God, called to be saints. Grace to you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 11: 29-32
29 And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation: it asketh a sign, and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold more than Solomon here.
32 The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas; and behold more than Jonas here.
Reflection
God has made his salvation known, yet the Gospel shows how easily people can demand further signs while overlooking the sign already given. Jesus is greater than Jonah and wiser than Solomon: in him, God’s mercy and truth stand before us in a living person. The people of Nineveh heard a prophetic warning and repented; the queen of the south traveled far to listen to wisdom. Their response exposes the danger of hearing God’s voice without allowing it to change us.
Paul describes himself and the Christians in Rome as called to belong to Jesus Christ and to live in obedience to faith. That calling is not reserved for a few extraordinary people. The risen Son gathers people from every nation into his grace and sends them to make his salvation known. We do not need to wait for a dramatic sign before responding. Christ speaks through the Gospel, and his word asks for a concrete answer: a softened heart, honest repentance, and faith expressed in daily obedience. The mercy revealed in Jesus is already being offered; the important question is whether we will receive it.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are greater than every sign, prophet, and teacher. Give me a heart that recognizes your presence and does not demand more proof before trusting you. When your word reveals sin or calls me to change, keep me from hardening my heart. Grant me the humility of Nineveh, the hunger for wisdom shown by the queen of the south, and the faithful obedience to which Paul was called. May your mercy take root in my life, and may my words and actions help others see the salvation you have made known. Amen.
