Sunday Reflection – 18 July 2021

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 18 July 2021

First Reading: Jeremiah 23: 1-6

The Gatherers Guide!

“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” says the Lord. (1)

Shepherds we all are! Shepherds and stewards of his kingdom within us and within those entrusted to us! Each of us baptized into Christ is his sheep and we belong to his pasture! So then, woe to us, if we do not gather ourselves and others into his pasture! The families we live in today, are the sheep entrusted to our care! Then, are we scatterers or gatherers?

“I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply.” (3)

Even though we are from the flock of God, if today we find ourselves in the minority; we have God’s promise! There is a gathering taking place as we speak, right now! Are we discerning enough to see and heed the directions?

If we desire to gather, we must stop scattering – our thoughts, plans, words, and deeds. We must stop dividing our own minds over trivialities. When our scattered minds come to rest in the Lord, we will be replenished beyond measure! The psalmist vouches for this! Once renewed, our minds are then set free to work on gathering more of ourselves and help others like us too! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 23: 1-3, 3-4, 5, 6

The Textbook for Rejuvenation!

He makes lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul. (2-3)

When we abide by his Word, we will heed his voice as He leads us to restoration!

Second Reading: Ephesians 2: 13-18

The Master Gatherer!

“For through Christ Jesus, both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.” (18)

St Paul lays it down very clearly today, speaking directly to us! He, St Paul, and us the gentiles and the ones from the distant lands; have one access! Earlier in this chapter, he clarifies this concept. We once had no hope, without God in the world. (12) Christ is! He lives among us today! Through His Cross, he has brought peace to each one of us here.

While God the Father is gathering us all, back into his fold now! Every human is called to be gathered back! I pray “Oh that today, we would listen to his voice.” Amen!

Gospel: Mark 6: 30-34

Call on the name of JESUS!

The apostles are sharing with Jesus, about their mission. While Jesus sees their labor and says to them “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest awhile.” (31) The Lord of all, knows our struggles. That is why when we call out his name, all our weariness, weakness, and sadness; just dissipate! Because there is power in his name itself. He understands the need for us to ‘rest’ and takes us to quiet pools of refreshing waters! If we listen closely, we would hear those streams of living waters bubbling away our anxieties! Faith does! Amen!

And oh yes, though a crowd may still be in want; Christ himself shepherds them even as we rest in Him!

Sunday Reflection – 11 July 2021

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 11 July 2021

First Reading: Amos 7: 12-15

Face your Amaziahs!

Amaziah, the priest of Bethel tells Amos to flee from there and not prophesy against Israel! But Amos responds with the command God gave him – “Go prophecy to my people.” (v.15)

Therefore, even when we are met with strong opposition and sometimes even from highly placed persons; we must remind them and ourselves about God’s command to us! We must not be bogged down by the negativity and accept it! But rather, we must keep reminding ourselves first and remain resolute in our ways.

So, prophecy, we must and when needed use words!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 85: 9-14

Hearing means Turning!

“Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful to those who turn to him in their hearts.”

“Righteousness will go before him and will make a path for his steps.”

When we listen to God’s voice and turn to him in our hearts; He makes a path for us!

Second Reading: Ephesians 1: 3-14

“We -The Co-heirs!”

“In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of His glory.” (v14)

St. Paul is encouraging us here today, as the ones who have heard our Gospel of Salvation and Believed! We have received the Holy Spirit through our baptism and confirmed at our Confirmation! God himself has pledged our redemption and we are the adopted children of God through Jesus Christ!

We have “the forgiveness of our trespasses” (v7) in the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. “He has made known to us the mystery of his will” (v9) through the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. We receive Christ, the Word of God, into our very being; every time we receive the Holy Eucharist!

“As a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (v10) We know we are currently living in the last days and when we ‘hear’ these words of truth; we are strengthened in our walk! – Because we heard, we believed and we kept to ‘the way’ in steadfastness! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 6: 7-13

Power and Finance Management!

What did Christ allow his chosen, to carry and what were his commands? -Staff, Sandals, and One tunic! -Easy to travel, no baggage therefore no attachments! Staff- Word of God, Sandals – Holy Spirit to protect and to guide their steps! One Tunic- to wear what they had- no more, no less! Putting on the whole armor of God (Eph 6:1-13) and wearing it with pride and reverence! When we work out of pride and reverence for God, we are successful; just as the apostles! They had to depend on God completely for all their basic needs – food, money, and shelter!

“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place!” (v10) – Decision making, choices, and commitment! If we decide (under the guidance of the Holy Spirit) on a certain shelter for our stay – we must remain there until we decide to leave the town!! That means when the house dwellers are welcoming; we will know how long deems fit to reside in that town! That house dweller/owner will be the sample of the town’s welcome!

Therefore then, the converse also holds true for the above! So we must quickly “shake off the dust” (of negativity and reproach against us) and leave that town! -“If they refuse to hear you” (v11) We are bound to gather dust on our feet – bondages/ weaknesses to hold us back/down! When we shake the sandals (Our Power of the Holy Spirit within, is activated) as a “testimony”- God is our witness. We bear testimony than to our faith as well as to the power of God within us! Hence, we are well within our rights and possess the authority, to reject the “dust” thrown at us! Do not delay the good work of the Lord!

The question now remains, where have we entered? Have we made some choices/ decisions, that may be holding us captive?

Praise GOD!

Sunday Reflection – 04 July 2021

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Independence Day

Also Read: Mass Readings for 04 July 2021

First Reading: Ezekiel 2: 2-5

“When he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me.” (2)

The message today is loud and clear – To speak the word of God to a rebellious people! -Whether they hear or not!!

Based on this premise, it is not difficult to understand why we face trials, today! The moment anyone tries to walk in the way of the Lord, he/she has to endure hardships and hurdles. But this is what we are called to do because we do not belong to the world. Therefore, we will not conform to this world though we are present here, now. We will be in the constant renewal of our minds. (Rom12:2)

For it is first and foremost our responsibility to walk in true faith. By our lives, we speak louder than any of our speeches! This concept is confirmed even as we read beyond the reading today! Though the words thrown at us may be like thorns and briers (6); we must not be dismayed or afraid. For it is the Lord who asks us to eat of the scroll of lamentations! (Ch.3.3) There is a Reason! The scroll is sweet as honey in my mouth!

Therefore be not afraid Little Children, out on the whole armor of God, in Christ Jesus! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 123: 1-2, 2, 3-4

Our Soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud. (4) But we have sweetness in our mouth because we look to the hand of God as a maid looks at her mistress. (2)

Praise God!

Second Reading: Second Corinthians 12: 7-10

The Great Paradox

“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (8)

“Therefore I am content with weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” (9)

“Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” (10)

The greatest paradox of our Faith: “For whenever I am weak, then I am strong!” This is only possible if we live in Christ! That “messenger of Satan”(7) is a very present one for us, practicing Catholics today!! How often do we struggle first with our own doubts, fears, worries, lack of faith, lack of discretion et al? Then, adding to that there might be certain messengers from outside who suddenly appear with their thorns and briers. Well, this too is a very present problem for us today! These messengers could land surprisingly at our doorsteps or they might already be covertly living around us! Strange and scary!

But as we read today, there is no need to fear! Because: “Greater is he that is in me than the one in the world!” St. Paul testified earlier to us! So then, the Greatest Paradox of our lives in Faith bears absolutely True! Therefore we rejoice, Praise God! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 6: 1-6

Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown and among their own kin, and in their own house.” (4)

The Son of God was not respected in his own hometown!! Christ Jesus himself faced those messengers of satan, in his own life here on earth! And HE showed us the Way!

He did perform cures but “he could do no deed of power there” (5)

We are today placed in various positions and given varied responsibilities! We know all of this has a purpose! Then, if we are to face difficult situations in a Godly manner; we ought to submit to His ways! Christ did confront those “brood of vipers” too! But only in His time and place! Therefore, when we go to Him first and seek His Wisdom in all our endeavors we ought to find the solution to every problem, hurdle, or attack! Faith moves those mountains and loosens those little ribbons of stress and anxieties we tie around our own souls and spirits! -Quite ignorantly and unnecessarily!

“And he was amazed at their unbelief.” (6)

Jesus Christ would no deed of Power there, He left them at it! -Because of their unbelief! We are to proclaim His word at all times. It must be reciprocated by the others in a similar fashion or else we too can leave it to The LORD!

Amen! May we all have Peace and Conviction to proceed on our Faith Journey! Amen!

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 27 June 2021

First Reading: Wisdom 1: 13-15; 2: 23-24

A seed of Faith and a pinch of courage

God did not make death! He created us for incorruption! Isn’t this fact both life-changing and mindboggling, at once? (13- 15)

Death entered the world through the envy of the devil! (24) The devil had free will too, just like all creatures! But he chose to rebel against God! Why? Because of his own pride and envy! He was envious of God and subsequently he is envious of us, human beings! The root of all evil is envy! And because he is envious of us, he will throw stumbling blocks in our way when we just want to read the word of God! Just because we must not get a hold of this wonderful insight, straight from God’s word!

Now that we know, we must ascertain who’s company we belong to!

Here, the question begs to be asked: “Just because we can, should we?” Just because we can live ruthlessly, should we? Seed of Faith and a pinch of courage is all that we need!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 30: 2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13

Praise God, forever!

Ps. 30:12 “So that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.”

We were created to praise God forever! May we not miss our opportunity, by our own foolishness!

Second Reading: Second Corinthians 8: 7, 9, 13-15

Abundance and Need!

2Cor 8:14 “(a fair balance between) Your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need. In order that there may be a fair balance.”

Are we blessed with abundance in any area of our lives? Yes! We are surely blest, all we need is to retrain our focus and attune our wavelengths! Then, once we know this abundance in us; we are to use it for the benefit of the others around us! Only then will the abundance multiply and be fruitful!

So what is Paul speaking about here as “their abundance”? The abundance of a lacking (need) in a certain area! Eg: Are you a patient person? Well, then your patience (your abundance) is the need of the other! What is your need then?  – A need to be purified and polished! Therefore, your need is being met by the other!

May we find the abundance and nourish the needs of ourselves and the others around us!

Help Us, O Mother of Perpetual Succour! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 5: 21-43

“Talithacum!”

We might be suffering for years with a hemorrhage of the heart or soul or spirit! We are encouraged today to approach the Lord anyhow, somehow! -Because we Believe in Him! Even though, we might be ashamed or afraid to approach him upfront! Even with a crowd jostling us about, we can still reach out to the fringes of his cloak. He will heal us! We are to then show courage in coming forward to him in public view and acclaim our healing. Our permanent healing is then confirmed then by the Lord!

Amen!

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 20 June 2021

First Reading: Job 38: 1, 8-11

Who controls the storms and the seas?

The Lord speaks to Job out of the whirlwind and asks Job to answer his questions. Who shut the doors for the seas, created clouds as its garments. Swaddled its darkness and prescribed bounds, so to stop its proud waves? In a rhetorical round of questioning, God himself makes us realize how awesomely and fearfully powerful He is! The author here likens the seas to an infant and its swaddling.

Imagining the unruly waters bursting forth from the depths and being wrapped in darkness, brings into perspective the magnificence of God’s mighty power. Are we acutely and actively aware of God’s immense greatness and power? Do we act in reverence of him, daily? Or are we being blinded to keep at our vile ways of living?

May we truly know and act in reverence of the supremacy of God in our lives. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 107: 23-24, 25-26, 28-29, 30-31

So we praise Him in the storms!

Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. (31)

Oh, that today, in the midst of our storms were we to praise God for his mighty deeds; we would know his love. We would praise him, because we know he holds us in the storms and covers the seas we face! Amen!

Second Reading: Second Corinthians 5: 14-17

Everything has become new!

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (17)

According to recent news articles, there is a new creation taking place all over the world. New species are being found as of now -species in the sea and in remote forests! Do we find a new reckoning, deep within the untouched premises of our souls? Are we aware of the spring of new birth, resurgent within the confines of our long-forgotten memories/ talents/ relationships? Do we desist and resist these new spurts of life? Are we courageous enough to let the new life form, take root, and bloom within us?

Come O Holy Spirit, warm the frozen, melt the chill; Bend the stubborn heart and will. If we truly believed we are in Christ, we would not hinder our recreation! Be courageous and bloom! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 4: 35-41

Why are you afraid, have you still no faith?

He said to them, “Why are you afraid, have you still no faith?” (40)

If we have followed the Lord and if it is the evening when the storm has struck us; we must be assured that Christ is at the stern of our boat! He told us to get here, then why are we afraid? He calmed that storm 2000 years ago and is calming the storm inside each of us today; if we listen!

Amen! Praise God!

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 13 June 2021

First Reading: Ezekiel 17: 22-24

Flourishing

All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord, I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken, I will accomplish it. (24)

Ezekiel is commissioned by God and sent to the rebellious Israelites. (Ez 2:3) In this context then, they are being warned here for their iniquities. There is nothing impossible for God. Therefore, what was once bountiful, now is being dried up! A flourishing nation is being warned about its rebellion with dire consequences. Whereas, what was once parched is being renewed into a high tree!

Are we a rebellious people? Are there any countries today that are being rebellious? We must take heed, we are being warned here today; by God himself!

On the other hand, do we sense certain aridity about us and around us? There is hope for us in this word of God. There is a new awakening in the Spirit, a new rising that is birthing a whole new generation, a new nation of God!

Prayer: Oh that today you would listen to his voice, harden not your hearts! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 92: 2-3, 13-14, 15-16

Renewal

In old age they still produce fruit, they are always green and full of sap. (14)

What was once dry is being renewed. When God provides, even the old are revived! The sap of the Lord is his joy in his subjects. For nothing is impossible with God! The righteous flourish (2) in the Lord’s kingdom. His kingdom is here!

Second Reading: Second Corinthians 5: 6-10

The New Rising

For we walk by faith and not by sight. (7)

Yes, as Christians, Catholics, and disciples of Christ we are called to walk by faith. This is a journey, where the first step must be taken without seeing the whole road!

For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. (10)

All that we do in these earthly bodies of ours, beginning with our thoughts and intentions are subject to the greater law of God. We are born of God and let not the world deceive us about this fact! Then, as we walk in His Light, remaining still in our earthy form; we are bound to face darts from the jealous one! The former angel of light, now deemed to prowl the dust because of his pride cannot help but remain jealous of us the sons and daughters of God! Therefore, he comes with all his might, enticing us into his ways. A very real and spiritual force is working against the people of God today. And not for any small reason! If this one had the audacity to go before God and fight for the body of Moses, we must imagine his fight against us little mortal beings.

Sure, we are ravaged by a devouring lion each day, but our stripes and wounds are covered each night as we rest in the Lord. Every morning brings a new rising in the Lord, as we forge our way to the Holy One of God. Amen!

Gospel: Mark 4: 26-34

The Fruitful Seed

The earth produces of itself…(28)

Does it really? If it is not the finger of God in the seed, the soil, and the harvest, will it produce of its own? No, it will not! Therefore the faith that we have is itself a gift from God. To be called, to hear, and to listen to his word are God’s own mercies upon us, his meandering people.

(The kingdom of God) is like a mustard seed… (31)

For any good work that flourishes, must have the hand of God guiding it! The birds that flock to the branches of this flourishing tree will surely find, shelter and refuge! The comfort and peace in knowing the people of God is by itself an assurance of God’s work in them. We will know them by their works! For example, God is the Creator, that is why He created the earth. Similarly, when a truly blessed one finds water in the desert, he will go out and share it with others in the desert with him. Then, like the birds, animals, and humans are quenched by the water shared by this one human; the kingdom of God is spread further. Therefore his actions, attest to the kingdom of God dwelling in him.

Prayer: We have been blessed today in the hearing and sharing of the word of God, may we in turn be the blessing to others. Amen

THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Solemnity

Also Read: Mass Readings for 06 June 2021

First Reading: Exodus 24: 3-8

The Contract of Faith

Then Moses took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do and we will be obedient.” (7)

We have made a pact with the Lord of our own free will; we ought to live by it. But do we? We first need to study the scriptures more to let his Word be revealed to us. The people of Israel, saw God speak to Moses on the mountain for forty days and nights. We must reach for the Bible given to us, to be able to see God Speak to us.

How do we see God Speak? – Only through Faith! We ask God to strengthen our Faith. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 116: 12-13, 15-16, 17-18

God is Faithful always, are we?

What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me? (12)

I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. (18)

The question at the beginning of the psalm is mystically answered in the last verse. Can we ever really return anything to the Lord? We can only offer to him what he has given us already! – The faith we have is his gift to us! Hence, the least that we ought to do then is to remain faithful to him always. Amen!

Second Reading: Hebrews 9: 11-15

Christ our High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb!

Paraphrasing Verses 11 and 12: Christ our High priest, entered the perfect tent made not by human hands, into the Holy Place once for all.

How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! (14)

The people of Moses’ time were promised the land and God created this pact with them there. (Ex 24:7) But after the first covenant, people transgressed against the Lord. (Hebrews 15) Then, Christ came to redeem us from this transgression. God himself went down to hell for our sake! He rose again to bring us back to life in him – life to the fullest.

If we truly desire to worship God in Spirit and in Truth, we ought to despise the dead works of the flesh. In dead works, a living God cannot be glorified! Or, even though we may accomplish some works of mercy, if our hearts and motives are not holy; then those works are as good as dead. We must always remember that we worship the Living God. Amen!

Gospel: Mark 14: 12-16, 22-26

The Blood of the New Convenant

He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many. (24)

Jesus Christ came to the Earth, lived and died among us; and before he died he established the New Covenant for us. We partake of this covenant at every Holy Eucharistic celebration. How blessed are we that the Lord has designed us to receive his mighty blessings through this Holy Sacrament!

I pray that the devotion to the Holy Eucharist is ever increased in God’s mercy. In these times, may all online services flourish under God’s powerful hand. Amen!

Praise you Abba Father, Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit Lord! We are healed, we are saved, we are sanctified by your precious blood! Amen!

3 Creative Tips For Boosting Virtual Church Ministry

0

In a survey of online pastors, 72% of churches reported weekly online attendance, according to Vanderbloemen’s data. The church is a key pillar people lean onto for support to overcome uncertainties. However, there are times church members cannot attend services in person due to illness, work, or school. Whatever reasons your members may have for not attending church doesn’t mean you should forget about their spiritual needs. As a church leader, you can ensure all your members worship and praise together regardless of distance via online services. The beauty of virtual churches is that they are inexpensive and easy to host. Whether you’re organizing a retreat to recharge the soul or a small prayer congregation, here are creative tips for boosting virtual church ministry.

Provide Pre-Recorded Sermons

In a virtual setting, religious leaders can provide pre-recorded sermons so that followers can participate during their free time. For instance, if a church member missed a live stream, they can watch a recorded version on the church’s website. Other churches post replays of previous sermons on social media platforms like Facebook, Vimeo, and YouTube. That way, followers can have easy access to the content regardless of time and location. Besides easy access, virtual congregations offer numerous benefits, including freedom, inclusivity, and diversity.

Encourage Discussions To Build A Community

Building a strong community in your church is a vital step to ensure members have the spiritual support required to lead a better life. And one of the best ways to achieve this goal is by encouraging discussions on engagement tools available on virtual event platforms. For instance, breakout rooms allow religious leaders to organize workshops and brainstorming sessions. Doing so promotes networking among church members via live chats and sharing video or audio. Other valuable tools for promoting engagement include Q&A sessions, polling, alerts and notifications, and quizzes.

Maintain Group Ministry Schedules

Despite not meeting physically, maintaining group ministry schedules is essential to promote normalcy in the church. For example, instead of canceling weekly in-person bible study sessions, host them virtually via Zoom, Skype, or Facebook Live. Live streaming weekly group discussions, sermons, and prayers enables you to connect with members more intimately than you would during large virtual church services held on Sundays.

Virtual congregations have become the norm since the global health pandemic hit, resulting in the cancellation of in-person services. With virtual platforms like YouTube, Zoom, and other apps, religious congregations can continue to worship. However, for the online church to succeed, religious leaders need to maintain group ministry schedules, provide pre-recorded sermons, and build communities through virtual discussions.

THE HOLY TRINITY Solemnity

Also Read: Mass Readings for 30 May 2021

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4: 32-34, 39-40

“So acknowledge today and take to heart that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.” (39)

Today, let us take stock of how well we are doing in regard to this simple and age-old instruction. Acknowledge – do we acknowledge God? If we truly did, we wouldn’t live as if he doesn’t exist! Where is our acknowledgment of God, when there is a simple call to an act of mercy or kindness? In the needy or suffering brethren around us, do we not know God exists in them too?

Take to heart – Are we conscious in our hearts of his daily living in us? We ask Him to come and save us from trouble, but do we realize He lives in our spirits already? -Daily whispering in our ears words of wisdom, hope, and courage.

The Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath – If we, children of God, truly cherish this belief inside of us, we would never chase after false prophets at all! Do we go into tents and temples and eat of their sacrifices? Do we fill our bellies with their food? Do we fall for their superstitious practices and tie weird things around our hands or other parts of our bodies? Do we profane our bodies with tattoos? Do we ignorantly open up our minds and bodies to pagan practices? Do we look for signs and wonders in creatures crawling the earth? Do these pagan practices entice us like the apple which Eve bit into? It was pleasing to her eyes, good for eating, and gave supposed knowledge? The revelry, the colors, and the pomp of pagan practices could well be our forbidden apple.

There is no other – Yet, do we go about making gods of ourselves, our spouses, our friends, our possessions, our wealth et al? Woe to us, if we profane the first commandment! Be warned! Stop all occult practices and divinations. Stop pagan worship in your houses! We would have been ignorant before, but now that the word of God has revealed this to us, it is our bounded duty to follow the law of God to the letter. God be with us! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 33: 4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22

His word

“For he spoke and it came to be, He commanded and it stood firm.” (9)

The raging waters were quelled into a creative life force at the command of his one word. His one breath stilled the storms.

“To deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.” (19)

The famine around us does not affect our souls because the God of abundance lives there.

Second Reading: Romans 8: 14-17

Children of God

“For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father! It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” (15-16)

If we have been permitted to cry out to God as our Father, it is the Spirit of God that raises that voice in our human spirit. Therefore, firstly we must believe and know that we are children of God. Then, as children of God, we must not fear the brickbats coming our way. In fact, it is then that we can be certain that we are in alignment with God’s plan for us! Why else would we have opposition?!

Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20

The Great Commission

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember I am with you always, till the end of the age.” (18-20)

As Christ ascends into heaven, he commissions his disciples with these words! We adopted children of God, have been bought at a very precious price: by the blood of Jesus, Son of God himself. Therefore it becomes imperative for us to walk in the light of his spirit, bound by his infinite love and mercy. He is with us and will be with us until the end of ages! How blessed are we!

Then, we ought to do as he has commanded: Go and make disciples! We can begin with our own lives, being an example of Christ living in us! Proclaiming through our everyday living, as models to those around us. This a great evangelizing technique, more powerful than any words.

Go therefore, Proclaim Jesus by your lives! Amen!

First Reading: Acts 2: 1-11

Together in one place!

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.” (1)

There is a certain uniqueness about the oneness of God’s people, that the devil doesn’t like; in fact, he hates it. Wherever we gather as one, in God’s name; sooner rather than later there is a sudden unexpected cause for strife! Sounds familiar? We see it occurring across the world, be it in small units of families or major conglomerates, or even clergy. What must God’s people do to counter this? -Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us! HE is our only hope!

We may speak different tongues, but when the Holy Spirit is with us; we can understand the most difficult of languages! Amen.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 104: 1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34

Knit together!

“O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” (24)

And He alone brings his creatures together into a knit family.

“May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.” (34)

Second Reading: Galatians 5: 16-25

Life in the Spirit

“Live by the spirit, I say and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires are opposed to the spirit and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want.” (16-17)

In the opposing here mentioned by St. Paul, there is a nature of the flesh and nature of the spirit being portrayed here. The flesh opposes the spirit specifically at the point when our Dear Holy Spirit guides us in moving in a certain way. We intrinsically always want to do what the spirit guides us to do. But it is the flesh that fights back in deceptive and subtle ways. Sometimes, it is by creating a false fear in our minds; while sometimes it is in simply throwing us those distractions through the gadgets we own. We must be watchful and ask the Holy Spirit for His discernment, in helping us thwart those sly advances. Amen.

“If we live by the spirit, let us also be guided by the spirit.” (25)

If we claim to be Christ’s followers let us be very clear in this regard. We have been granted the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and must live by His promptings. For this way of life to take root in us, we need to cover ourselves in prayer, read and meditate on the word of God, and spend “Me-time” in God’s presence. This is a sure way of hearing Him speak. Amen.

Gospel: John 20: 19-23

Peace through forgiveness!

“Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (21)

Peace comes from the Holy Spirit! On the Ressurection Sunday evening, when Jesus came to his disciples in the midst of their locked room of fear; He gave them His Peace. In encountering Christ that evening, the apostles knew peace in their hearts. They rejoice as soon as they realize, The Lord’s victory over death! Once the rejoicing begins, Christ breathes his spirit on them with a blessing of Peace again. The Spirit gives us an unexplainable peace, comfort, and joy, deep within the confines of our heavy hearts. When we encounter our Saviour we will naturally begin to rejoice in the sweetness of his presence in our souls. It is then that in the midst of our locked-down hearts and spirits we will rejoice.

“If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any they are retained.”(23)

After the joy and comfort in their hearts, the apostles are charged with a mission. They are to “forgive the sins of any”! Considering the backdrop of the settings of that evening, this was a tall order! The apostles themselves had hidden in fear for their lives from the forces that crucified their Lord. They must surely have held a hurt feeling at least against the persecutors, if not a resentful one? But, Jesus tells them the opposite! “Forgive any”! -that must begin with the ones who have hurt them the most!! A tall order indeed! When we forgive others, we ourselves are released of the pain, hurt, and resentment. This is the first step towards Peace.

Help us O Lord to hear your voice through the Holy Spirit in us! May we never grieve the Holy Spirit by not following His word. Help us, Dear Mama Mary. Amen!
