Sunday Reflection – 16 May 2021

ASCENSION OF THE LORD Solemnity (Seventh Sunday of Easter)

Also Read: Mass Readings for 16 May 2021

First Reading: Acts 1: 1-11

He Stayed with them!

“While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me” (4)

Have we been ordered by the Lord to not leave Jerusalem and wait there? Does life seem to be a turmoil sometimes, like a whirlwind that sweeps you over the years? Has a particular situation rocked our boats so hard that we can hardly stay afloat in it? Do we then hear the savior say to us: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father.” One institution that could be bearing the brunt of this current pandemic is the holy sacrament of Matrimony. With jobs lost and most people in forced lock-ins at home globally, there seems to be a tremendous amount of stress on everyone. In this stormy sea as he stays in our boat, could the Lord be saying those same words to us today?

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” (8) “While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them.” (10) “They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (11)

The simple group of fishermen and other downcasts of society had been following a Lord who was to redeem the world. Yet he didn’t go out with an army and sword to annex his kingdom. Instead, he suffered and died, then after three days, he stood among them living and talking! The Risen Christ must have shone in his divinity to them and the image of him alive after his resurrection can never be explained in words! His true divine present self is! That is all! For the disciples, the experience must have been truly a deeply profound one. He stayed with them!

He stays with us today! In our lockdowns and isolations! He is sitting next to us, hugging us! We need to just turn our gaze upward toward him and feel his warm embrace. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 47: 2-3, 6-7, 8-9

Shift your gaze!

“God is King over the nations, God sits on his holy throne.” (8)

Lift up your gaze and see him on the throne over the nations. May he grant us the grace to lift up our gaze. Amen!

Second Reading: Ephesians 4: 1-13

We are one!

“There is one body and one spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, (4) one Lord, one faith, one baptism, (5) one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. (6)

We have one God and one Father, who lives in us through his holy spirit! We ought to safeguard our unity with God, his people all over the world, and in our families too.

Gospel: Mark 16: 15-20

The Great Commission

“They will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (18)

Could there be a deadly thing we need to pick up and out of our lives? Is there a vice or an attitude that needs to be cut off? -That gluttonous or lecherous habit perhaps, which has long coiled itself around us? Or the fangs of fear and doubt? We can pick up each such slithering trait and cut it off completely. These traits have long held their grip over us and as soon as we cut them off, we are able to experience a definite sense of relief and joy in our inner being. The constriction that held us, slave, for so long, is vanquished through the power of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord permit us the grace to take the right action. Amen!

Christ commissions his disciples to go into the world and proclaim the good news. May we first proclaim the Good News to our own self! May we believe in His Good News and set our own selves free! He has promised us the signs, once we truly believe in him. Then, as we venture to proclaim his good news to others, we will see miracles occur in our own lives. Amen!

We believe Lord, Help our unbelief! Help us O LORD to be vigilant and steady in faith! Thank You, GOD! Mother Mary Pray for us, Amen!

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Also Read: Mass Readings for 09 May 2021

First Reading: Acts 10: 25-26, 34-35, 44-48

Loaves and Fish

But Peter made him get up saying, “Stand up I am only a mortal.” (26)

The humility of the man proves his greatness. It would have been quite convenient for Peter to give in to pride and accept the adulation that he had begun to receive. But not this Peter, a man who had experienced and lived with the Risen Christ, was a higher mortal now. May we not pride ourselves in the talent/grace/skill God has blest us with, but act out of a humble and grateful heart! For apart from God we can do nothing. While many talented/graceful/skillful people might languish in despondence around us! Only when we are blessed by the Lord in our own field/profession or art, does our work become a success. In our innermost self, we must be acutely conscious of the fact that we cannot take credit for any of the success that we might achieve.

Then Peter began to speak to them, “I truly understand that God shows no partiality.” (34)

Enlightened by his vision on the terrace a little earlier, Peter acknowledges the equality of all men before God. Why must we, mere mortals, then stand in the way of their return to Him? “While Peter was still speaking the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word.” (44) Proving Peter absolutely right in his conviction, God now sends his Holy Spirit on all who heard the word.

May we realize that we ought to sow the seeds and not worry about the harvest as disciples. Our Lord God Almighty will take care of the rest. Matthew 13:31 describes the work of the Kingdom, beautifully. May we do our daily tasks in faith. May our minds always be open to working upon the promptings of the Dear Holy Spirit. May we offer our five loaves and two fish to Him. It is the Lord who will feed the five thousand. (Mt.14:17) Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 98: 1, 2-3, 3-4

“O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.” (1)

Have you ever felt a long, warm, loving embrace from a dear one? Through the Holy Spirit, God embraces us, in those strong arms, especially when we are at the lowest, weakest, and darkest points of our life. By his strong arm, he wins us back to himself, in a victorious embrace! Praise the Lord.

Second Reading: First John 4: 7-10

God is love!

“Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (8)

To know God we must develop a humbled spirit and a quietened heart. When we are contrite in spirit and receptive to the creator, we will be able to experience God’s love. Our minds may never really comprehend the depths of God’s love for us. But our soul and spirit can truly see his face and embrace his love in our hearts. For to know love, it must be experienced!

Gospel: John 15: 9-17

God’s commandment is Love!

Do we know Love? How do we explain Love? God is Love! So can we say we know God? If we truly abide in God, we would know Him. Each one of us encounters and experiences God in our own unique and special way. We must only be willing to submit our minds, hearts, souls, and spirits totally into his hands. It may take us months and years, to come to this realization. Our Dear Holy Spirit comes to our aid in this particular matter. He will refine us like the refiner and renew our minds to truly see God.

Christ told us his commands so that his joy may be in us and our joy may be complete. (11) God commands us because He calls us friends. (14) He gives us his commands so that we may love one another. (17) When meditating on these words, we are naturally filled with a great sense of awe and reverence for our great and humble God! The entire universe with all its beauty, wisdom, and strength cannot fathom the love of God!

Prayer

May we realize God’s Love in us. Jesus King of Divine Mercy, we trust in you. Amen!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Also Read: Mass Readings for 02 May 2021

First Reading: Acts 9: 26-31

Finding Barnabas!

But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described for them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. (27)

Though only six verses are dedicated to describing the events unfolding in the first reading today, it would have taken time, maybe, at least a few days to resolve the matter! It is only after Barnabas testifies to Paul, (still called Saul here) and his work in Jesus’ name, that the apostles are able to accept and embrace him. May we find our Barnabas today; in the midst of all the chaos surrounding us! Living a disciple’s life is tough enough and to have our own Barnabas advocating for us is God’s gift to us! Guess who is our ever-constant Advocate? The Holy Spirit of course. May we know and believe this fact- that if we trust and ask our Advocate, we will be led by him through the dark times! We will trample upon snakes and scorpions and we will not be harmed! (Luke 10:19) Because Christ said so! Therefore our faith today must be strong in all the tests that we face.

When the believers learned of it, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.  (30)

That the believers cared for Saul is evident in the following verses. Having learned of the Hellenists’ plot to kill Saul, the believers send him off to safety. The working of the Holy Spirit can be seen here very evidently! The love and concern showed by the believers and the power to deliver Saul from his enemies naturally came from the Lord through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works in powerful and astonishing ways when we submit to him. I pray that we would listen to His promptings as earnestly as we could. It is only when we surrender in humility and faith to our Lord, that we are thus led.

Meanwhile, the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers. (31)

Living in the fear of the Lord must precede our every thought, word, action, joy, and suffering. The comforter provides us our every need, as was witnessed in the early church. The church not only had peace but it was also built up too! Today as we search for strength and peace, we know who can provide!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 22: 26-27, 28, 30, 31-32

Strength and Peace

They shall eat and be satisfied, those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever. (26)

The Psalm today, resonates with the message of the Lord’s final coming. May we see and know. May we believe and praise God the Lord Almighty. Amen!

Second Reading: First John 3: 18-24

True Love in Action

Little children, let us love not in word or speech, but in truth and action. (18)

St. John today provides us a blueprint for our actions. This blueprint clearly lays down the specifics of how we are to conduct ourselves if we truly believe in God and his Son Christ Jesus. Our actions, that is our work and our accomplishments; ought to then speak of God’s love in us! We will be able to operate from a level of higher intimacy with God only when we submit ourselves to him. This reverent living comes only through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord has bestowed upon us his Holy Spirit, who covered the waters from the beginning with him. (Gen1:2) The wind that hovered over the formless void of the earth, lives in us today! The Spirit instructs us in the truth and guides our steps. In John 15:14-17, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, the spirit of Truth and fulfilled this promise on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) and on several other occasions to others, throughout the Acts of the Apostles! Do we doubt his presence in us?

All who obey his commandments abide in him and he abides in them. And by this, we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us. (24)

The Spirit that he has given us, guides us to obey his commandments. What are his commandments? You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40) If we are able to earnestly follow these two commandments, however challenging they may seem at times; we are assured of God’s comfort for us. For in walking on this path, we may find ourselves being condemned, either by others or many times by our own self! It is then, that God sends us his comforter like a miraculous shower on parched fields. May we see ourselves as God sees us and may we love ourselves enough to stop condemning ourselves!

In the tough times, we live in today, we are morally, spiritually, and mentally enriched by the Holy Spirit. We ought to rely on his supreme power to get us through these raging waters. Christ is in our boat, may we know the truth and act out of His love.

Gospel: John 15: 1-8

The Pruning!

Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. (2)

It is quite a pruning that a true disciple must undertake in order to bear much fruit. One can be assured of God’s miraculous abundance in one’s life when one chooses to live as a true disciple. Yet his pruning arrives quite unannounced on most of the days. On those days too, God holds our arms to steady us, as he walks with us over those furious waves. We, in turn, need to keep our gaze fixed on him so that we do not falter. In our living out the faith we can be assured of the unseen ways God uses us to lead others! Only, we may not understand it right away but we must know that there is a great pruning in progress.

If you abide in me and my words abide in you ask for whatever you wish and it will be done for you. (7)

What great words of strength from God himself -that we could ask him for whatever we wish for and it will be done!! We do not realize the implication of those words yet! If we did, we would drop everything and lean only on his word. What a joy to be filled by the Lord himself. Imagine if we would dare to ask him to turn our dry stone water jars into wine-filled ones!! We would really receive the same. We abide in him when we keep his commandments. And when we abide in him we would ask and receive from him. In turn, then, we would bear much fruit and become his true disciples.

We could begin with reading his word daily, attending the Holy Eucharist as often as we can, (daily if possible) and devoting a special time for personal prayer, alone with the Lord. Also, the Holy Rosary and the 3 pm Divine Mercy Prayer work as our shield and strength in our darkest moments. We have been offered a disguised opportunity in this cloistered lifestyle today, to turn; in our own unique ways to the Lord. Shall we?

Prayer: Amidst the tumult around us, O Lord, may we know you in the silence of our hearts!  May we hear your voice in the sanctuaries of our souls. May we remember that we are being pruned because you chose us! May we know you are closest to us as we live out Psalm 91 in our lives today. For we who dwell in the secret place of the highest shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty!

Thank you God! Thank you Mother Mary, Amen!

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 4: 8-12

Problem-solving!

“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.” (12)

St. Peter continues his bold testimony about Christ’s power! This passage begins with: “…filled with the Holy Spirit,” (i.e) Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and hence his boldness! All the simple four verses included in the reading are laden with power and the grace of God. Peter quotes the scripture in proclaiming Jesus as the cornerstone! Only a person inspired by the Holy Spirit is able to so aptly and effectively quote scripture!

The last verse closes the argument by saying that there is salvation in no one else. Do we realize this? Have we experienced this? Have we received Christ’s blessings in our lives before? Yes, we have! If we reflect on our lives, we will know this to be true. Yet, are we going over in circles trying to rid ourselves of certain issues in our lives? Then, we keep looking for alternatives elsewhere -be it in friends, relatives, other philosophies, gurus, etc!! May we know: there is only one solution to all our problems!

The greatest self-help book is the Bible, the greatest speaker: Jesus, and the greatest healer: God! May we turn our hearts to Him! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 118: 1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28, 29

Our First Prayer- Humility!

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord, than to put confidence in mortals. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” (8,9)

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing it is marvellous in our eyes.” (22-23)

“You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” (28-29)

When we have experienced God in our lives, we ought to ask Him for the Holy Spirit! Someone might say, we have the Holy Spirit at baptism already, so why ask now? It is because when we ask Him to illuminate our hearts, that we are in submission to His words. We must be fertile ground for his awakening in us! We are given free will by Our Dear Heavenly Father. The Holy Spirit being a person and part of the Holy Trinity works in us once we allow our spirit to be led by him. Our first prayer to him must be in our humility.

When we place our full confidence in him, with our humbled souls; we will be granted this grace by the Dear Holy Spirit. He the Holy Spirit is the best friend we could ever have! Christ promised us in John 14:16, that he would be our advocate/ advisor/counselor! Amen! Therefore, when we have been graced by his in-filling we will know! – We will know this in the quiet contentment of our heart and soul, we will know in the child-like joy within our spirit. -We will know the solution! Then we will know, that though Christ himself was rejected, He is now the Cornerstone! We ought to declare in joyful praise “You are my God and I will give thanks to you.”

Amen!

Second Reading: First John 3: 1-2

Let Your Light Shine!

The world did not know him! They will not know us! But we are God’s children through Christ Jesus! We do not see him with our human eyes and frail minds now! Beware, we know him in our hearts! -The Spirit cautions us, we can see him in our spirit if we reach out to him there!

Dear St. John the beloved disciple of Christ, today reveals to us gems of his own life experience of God’s intimate and profound love for us, his children. The two verses encompass our entire faith, here today! “…when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.” (2) – This is a glorious image the Holy Spirit graces us with when we worship God in spirit and in truth. We know God is light so we, his children, are specks of the same light. May we see by his light. Amen!

Gospel: John 10: 11-18

His own.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (11)

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.” (14)

“I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold, I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” (16)

“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.” (17)

Jesus Christ our good shepherd, lays down his life for us his sheep! Christ was thinking about us here today when he declared those words 2000 years ago! “…that do not belong to this fold,”(16) -We hail from various backgrounds, yet we are called into his fold as children of our God and Father! We are being gathered together today, from various parts of the world, through different means and driven by strange (to us) circumstances! May we understand this great truth! May we believe.

Our hearts rise in content and peace when we congregate in spirit with our brethren. We would have felt a fond joy in reuniting with our ‘own’ in the past! But in the world today, we experience a soothing comfort in knowing that like-minded people, somehow spiritually congregate when we worship/ write/ share on virtual devices globally. Praise God!

Prayer:

May we know Christ and our own in him! Amen!

It is amazing to note the common thread running in today’s readings and the gospel, from solutions to prayer and humility, to his light and his own! There is a perennial ray of love that traces itself through all of God’s word and penetrates human hearts with its warmth. Praise God!

10 Reasons Why Kids Should Read the Bible

We often think that religion is only for adults. However, while Jesus was still on earth, he mentioned that heaven’s kingdom is also for the little ones (Matthew 19:14, ESV).

The Bible commands parents to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

Now, here are ten reasons why kids should read the Bible:

1. It makes one wise.

Bible reading is a core activity, not an add-on.

For Christians, reading the Bible is a core activity and not an add-on. It offers a wide range of facts and Bible trivia. Interestingly, research showed that when parents read the Bible with their kids, it produces the following positive child-outcomes: increased intelligence, social skills, empathy, and coping skills.

The Jews are one of the first depositories of faith. Meanwhile, Jews are only 0.02 percent of the world’s population but 35 percent of all Nobel Prize winners. They are also reputed with good memories because, for them, remembering is one of God’s commands.

Without a doubt, the Bible has the power to make one wise! After all, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (Proverbs 9:10). In line with this, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;” (Proverbs 2:6).

2. Its study builds character.

It takes a lifetime to build character.

Character does not develop overnight. Instead, it takes time to build it. When we expose kids to the truth early, we create a foundation to prepare them for life and eternity.

Moreover, Bible lessons have a moral and religious influence on the character. Even Timothy, Paul’s spiritual son, has to learn these. As such, Paul taught him the importance of shunning evil. He told him that there are blessings for those who are faithful and true.

A person’s character is the sum of his or her disposition, thoughts, intentions, desires, and actions. Children exposed to the truth early on generally uphold a higher sense of morality than those who don’t have biblical foundations.

3. Its stories bring assurance to the timid child.

Encourage the child with Bible stories.

There are a lot of Bible stories that could give assurance to a timid child. Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.”

Tell him how the prophet Elisha was encircled by a band of heavenly angels in the mountain city between him and a host of armed men. Let him also read about how the Lord delivered Peter from death, opening the prison with massive doors and a great iron gateway with bolts and bars.

Encourage the youth with these stories. Take a leap of faith, asking God’s Spirit to work through your child the same way He did for these men of old!

4. It guards them against worldly allurements.

Worldly allurements creep into the church like mad.

True enough, there is little that we can do about it. The easy access to the worldwide web allows Satan to open avenues for temptations. Thus, children who are left on countless hours in front of the screen may be led astray.

Though Bible reading does not entirely shut children from worldly allurements, it may safeguard the youth with correct principles to overcome it. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Additionally, verse 9 says, “Resist him, firm in your faith,” knowing that your brotherhood is experiencing the same kinds of suffering throughout the world.

5. It provides them authentic stories of faith that may hone them to be life-long readers.

Reading is a habit that must start at an early age.

According to studies, children who read 3,000 words per day will be in the top 2% of standardized tests.

The American Academy of Pediatrics mentions that children introduced to reading early on “tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age.”

Also, reading is a habit that, once formed in an early stage, may last a lifetime.

All-time favorite stories for children:

  1. Creation story
  2. Noah’s ark
  3. Tower of Babel
  4. Abraham and Isaac
  5. Esau and Jacob
  6. Moses in the basket
  7. Gideon and his three hundred men
  8. Esther, the queen
  9. David and Goliath
  10. Daniel in the lion’s den
  11. The wedding at Cana
  12. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus
  13. Peter walks on water
  14. The conversion of Saul
  15. Faith stories of the early church

6. It lengthens their life.

The Bible improves the quality of and lengthens life.

Indeed, long life is promised to those who heed God. Biblical passages that suggest these include the following:

  1. Exodus 23:25-26
  2. Deuteronomy 5:33
  3. Deuteronomy 6:1-2
  4. 1 Kings 3:14-15
  5. Psalm 91:16
  6. Ephesians 6:1-4

According to research, global expectancy nowadays averages 71.4 years. And people who attend religious services and try to do what’s right live longer. It is due to the strong social network that develops among people who worship together. Also, it is due to the better choices they make that lead to stronger relationships and better careers.

Blue Zones in the world

Loma Linda, California, is the only blue zone in the US where people live ten years longer than their fellow Americans.

Blue zone refers to geographic areas that are home to the world’s most ancient people. They have a strong sense of faith, believing in the principles of rest, reflection, and a healthy lifestyle. Besides, they avoid meat. Instead, they eat plenty of plants, whole grains, and nuts.

7. It introduces to them the value of spiritual things over worldly ones.

Bible reading asserts upon the child’s mind the value of spiritual things over worldly ones.

Children trained to read the Bible early learn to love the truth. Hence, they gain knowledge more than those who are not. In line with his, Hannah’s lessons to young Samuel were so powerful that the boy chose to follow the Lord his entire life.

Furthermore, we can glean lessons from Jacob, who understood the spiritual significance of birthright as taught by her mother, Rebekah. He did everything he could to secure it for himself.

The Bible’s command in Deuteronomy 11:19 for parents to teach the law to the children is still valid today.

Specifically, it says, “You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Significantly, it enriches the mind to value spiritual things over secular ones.

8. It gives them joy beyond understanding.

No one wants their child to be lost.

True enough, depression is one of the challenges young people of today face. According to studies, 1.9 million children in 2021 are suffering from it. Satan is preying on young people by escalating their suicide rates by 56%.

No one wants their child lost. Chico Rivera, Jr. (2011) states, “in the hearts of all mankind, there are inexpressible longings for something they do not now possess.”

With this, young people must understand that there is indeed a God-shaped hole in the heart that only the Lord could fill. Prayer, ministry, and daily devotion can be an antidote for this.

Specifically, reading the Bible enlightens one of the principles that will allow a person to discover his sense of purpose. Eventually, realizing that purpose enables him to experience joy beyond understanding.

9. It builds their faith at an early age.

Research supports the early introduction of faith to children.

Indeed, reading the Bible to children allows their faith to solidify at an early age. Researches confirm that they are more receptive to accept Christ compared to adults.

Statistics showed that ⅔ of Christians came to faith before 18, where 43% did before age 12. Also, ¼ of current believers came to Christ beyond age 21.

Read the Bible while young as it is God’s ideal.

The Bible has little to say about the childhood of Jesus. Yet in Luke 2:52, it says, “And Jesus increased in wisdom…stature and…favor with God and man.”

While he was young, Jesus’ constant exposure to the Scriptures is God’s ideal for every Christian home. In our children’s case, biblical exposure allows them to grow in faith throughout their lifetime.

10. It leads them to a saving knowledge of Jesus.

Example of Daniel and his friends

Indeed, Daniel’s story is an inspiration for young people. The Bible mentioned that he was young, probably around 16 to 18, when the Babylonians took him and his friends to Babylon.

Yet, Daniel and his friends were “without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom.” Besides, they were “endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace” (Daniel 1:4).

Interestingly, they chose not to defile their bodies by eating the food from the king’s table. Significantly, their early training and biblical foundation raised them well with sound dignity and integrity.

Indeed, we live in a time and age where knowledge abounds. Unfortunately, the interest in Bible reading declines. Kids nowadays consume most of their time playing games that do not benefit their spiritual lives.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Also Read: Mass Readings for 18 Apr 2021

First Reading: Acts 3: 13-15, 17-19

True Boldness!

“And you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.” (v.15)  “And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.” (v.17)

“Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.” (v.19)

After the crippled beggar was healed, the beggar himself and others started to follow Peter and John. (Acts 3:1-12) Seeing this, Peter boldly addresses the crowd gathered that day in Solomon’s Portico. In verse 16; Peter declares that it is through Jesus’ name only (“his name itself has made this man strong.”) that the crippled were healed. Then in a show of empathy towards them, Peter seems to be excusing them in verse 17 – that is: “you acted in ignorance as did also your rulers!” He further provides them with a solution! Do St. Peter’s actions sound familiar to us!

Every time we drag ourselves down the ditch and hurt ourselves, do we not find God’s reassuring words echo in our hearts? “Come to me all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Every time we fall into the trap of sin we are crucifying Jesus all over again! Yet, we might have acted in ignorance until now! But today in the preaching of St. Peter we are offered a new path, a new life! – “Repent and turn to God!” (v.19)

Do we possess the boldness and faith of this simple fisherman who once, himself, had denied Jesus? Do we have the courage to take up his offer? We may have denied Jesus earlier, but today can we profess and proclaim our faith simply by the lives we live?

For in our humility to follow the Lord lies our true boldness! Alleluia!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 4: 2, 4, 7-8, 9

Peace!

“When you are disturbed, do not sin; ponder it on your beds and be silent.” (v.4)

“Offer right sacrifices and put your trust in the Lord.” (v.5)

“I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone O Lord make me lie down in safety.” (v.8)

The solution to our anxieties is offered in the verses above. The moment we are disturbed for whatever reason, we are to reflect on it in the silence of our bedrooms as we lie down to sleep! We are told to ponder and be silent!

This exercise can be quite difficult and opposite to our usual tendencies in reality! The moment we are disturbed in any little way we will first want to let others know about it. We might then want to malign the person/s involved in the same! But today we are asked to leave it in the hands of Our Lord. As we make our sacrifices in our journey and put our trust in him, we are assured of Peace! And then as we lie down and reflect on the situation, the Lord grants us a peaceful rest in His safety!

Are we willing to make the U-Turn?

Second Reading: First John 2: 1-5a

Love!

“But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” (v.1-2)

“Whoever says, “I have come to know him, but does not obey his commandments, is a liar.” (v.4)

“By this we may be sure that we are in him.” (v.5)

The readings today are woven together amazingly! In the first reading, St. Peter calls us to repentance and the psalm echoes the same; and here St. John beams the light on our “Way”: “Jesus Christ -as the advocate”! Even though we might have fallen astray, we still have Our Saviour to hold on to!! Jesus Christ is our advocate before God!! How truly amazing!! When we turn to Jesus, He advocates for us to God Our Father!

After we have received His comfort and blessings in our lives, we ought to obey His commandments! St. John reveals this to us in verses 4 and 5. The moment we declare we know him, we must act out of obedience to his commandments! What are his commandments? Jesus gave us a new commandment: “You shall love The Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” –Matthew 22:37-40

In a constantly turning world where insta-love is glorified and, true love lies battered and bruised; the Love that Christ speaks about may be lost to a generation of fickle listeners! If we claim to know God, do we really love him? How do we show this love for him? He is not physically present in our visible realms today to receive our love! The second command then gets activated, when we begin to see God in the neighbors around us.

The ‘neighbor’ we need to begin with most of the time today is our very own family members living right in our own homes! Does it get really challenging to love these neighbors of ours? Oh yes, sure! It could very well be a formidable task! ‘Cause loving the neighbor next door will be easier, as we don’t have to face them each minute of the day! A patient Christ who explains to his disciples even after appearing to them (physically), from the dead is our beacon today! -Luke 24:44-48 Remember, the disciples were his beloved ones while on earth, his friends, who lived with him! Jesus Christ didn’t just preach the gospel, He lived it through and through perfectly!

Now, we see that we have been subtly weaved into the gospel of today! Praise God!

Gospel: Luke 24: 35-48

Light!

“While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (v.36)

“Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance and forgiveness of sins are to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” (v. 45-48)

In reflecting on the gospel today, it would be very helpful to go back a few verses and read from Luke 24: 13-34. This will help us to see that the disciples who had encountered Jesus on their way to Emmaus; have now rushed back to Jerusalem to the ‘Eleven’ and are now narrating the incident to them! And while they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them! (v.36) I am utterly taken up by the thought that: “while they were still talking about him, he appears to them!”

Do we realize that when we speak about God to others, God is present there in our midst? – A profoundly glorious thought indeed! Remember, the disciples who were on their way to Emmaus too were talking about him and he joins them on their way! (Luke 24:15) This thought brings so much hope, like warm sunshine on a gloomy day! To have the Lord among us, while we are walking our way and while we are talking about him is truly a privilege! So, while we walk, we ought to talk about him; He will join us!

Then, the Lord opens their mind to understand scripture and tells them: “You are witnesses of these things!” Having understood from God himself, the disciples are now witnesses to the truth! Christ promises them a gift from the Father: “…to be clothed with power from on high.” (v.49) This verse reveals an important Promise of God to us! -The gift of the Holy Spirit. Then, after Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), St. Peter in today’s first reading, is witnessing of Christ’s death and resurrection. –Acts 3:15-19 By doing so, Peter is following his Lord’s command – “Repentance and forgiveness of sins are to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47

Meanwhile, we have beautifully traversed in faith from Emmaus, to Jerusalem and to Witnessing in the temple. Fabric is woven with the strands of faith! Thank You, God!

Prayer

May a strand of Christ’s spotless cloak be woven into the tapestry of our being and illumine our hearts, our souls, our spirits, and our minds! Amen!

Sunday Reflection – 11 April 2021

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER/DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Also Read: Mass Readings for 11 Apr 2021

First Reading: Acts 4: 32-35

The whole group of those who believed were of one heart and one soul. (v.32) With great power, the apostles gave their testimony to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and great grace was upon them all. (v.33)

The Oneness in the heart and soul of the Believers in the First Church is what stands out today! The growth of the early Church was -in its Unity! The apostles were granted great graces because of their powerful testimony. The imagery of this first church is so Heartening and Inspiring to us today, as we pursue in their footsteps! This Church also most closely resembled the Kingdom of GOD on Earth in the visible! Where no one was needy and everyone thought of the good of all! The oneness in the heart and soul of all people is the coming of GOD among our midst!

Prayer: We strive and pray for the Unity of All GOD’S Children!  Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 118: 2-4, 13-15, 22-24

“I was pushed hard so that I was falling, but The LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my might, HE has become my salvation.” (v.13-14) Let this be our resounding warcry! For: “This is the day that the LORD has made let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (v.24)

Alleluia!!

Second Reading: First John 5: 1-6

“Everyone who believes that JESUS is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child.”(v.1)

For whatever is born of GOD, conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our Faith.” (v.4)

The Key to Winning Every battle is proclaimed in these verses above! – Our Faith! To conquer any Mount, we must First Believe in Our Ability to overcome it! Similarly, the battle of our hearts, minds, souls, and spirits that we are faced with every day and every moment is conquered by our Faith! Eph. 6:10-20 reveals to us how we can be prepared daily in this war! Do not falsely believe the devil, that this life is no war/battle/combat etc. It truly is! 1Peter 5:8 “Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary, the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.” The heroic authors of these great books, evangelists and martyrs for Christ, Sts. Peter, John, and Paul spoke about what they had experienced first-hand themselves!

Therefore, conquer we Must! By self-control, we first discipline ourselves; our tongues, our greed, and our selfish desires! For we are Children of the Highest GOD! And We BELIEVE!

Prayer :LORD, We BELIEVE Help our Unbelief!

Gospel: John 20: 19-31

Peace Be With You.

On the evening of the first day of the week, -the same day when Mary Magdalene and the other women returned from HIS tomb with the GOOD NEWS of HIS Resurrection – They had locked themselves up in the house where they had met, for fear of the Jews! – Where did you meet The LORD? Which room, which house, which spot? Is there a specific time you had met with the LORD? Go back into that place! Lock yourself up! Even as the Pandemic forced us to lock ourselves into our own homes – Christ JESUS has come into our homes, in the silence of our world. HE says to us “Peace be with you.” We were fearful of the virus, yet we have found Peace within!

Have any of us missed this opportunity? It is not TOO late now! We must lock ourselves out of the miry things of the world and go into HIS presence. HE is in us already, when we were baptized and received the First HOLY Communion, we had already received HIM into our souls, spirits, and body! HE lives in us Today! We may not hear HIM breathe in us, but HE awaits our return! Remember HE is the “Gentleman GOD”!! HE doesn’t enforce HIS will on us, though HE is our Father! HE has lovingly permitted us a Free Will! Whether we return to HIS Calling is up to us!

Do We Want HIS PEACE?! A PEACE like no other ever could provide! A PEACE that heals us, fills and nourishes us, builds us! A PEACE no earthly gadgets, luxury models, fleshly pleasures or treasures could ever provide. HIS PEACE holds us on the rocky shores, guides us on the stormy seas, protects us in dark, gloomy valleys! HIS PEACE surpasses all understanding!

We can breathe HIS PEACE if we are willing! Just as HE Breathed on the disciples and gave them the HOLY SPIRIT, we too have an opportunity to receive similarly! If we leave our doubts outside the doors of our locked upper rooms and wait on the LORD in the silent sanctuaries of our hearts. Thomas Believed and then later died for HIS LORD and HIS GOD! What do we Profess today? Where do we stand?

Prayer: May we realize that the GOD-Sized Hole in us, can only be filled by God Himself! Amen!

Sunday Reflection – 04 April 2021

EASTER SUNDAY, The Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Also Read: Mass Readings for 04 Apr 2021

First Reading: Acts 10: 34a, 37-43

Peter’s Testimony!

“How GOD anointed JESUS of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (v.38)

“(JESUS appeared) not to all people but to us who were chosen by GOD as witnesses, and who ate and drank with HIM after HE rose from the dead.” (v.41)

St. Peter is making this proclamation of JESUS Christ’s Resurrection at the home of Cornelius, a Centurion of the Italian Cohort. Taking a brief look at the backdrop of today’s passage, we learn that Cornelius is visited by an Angel of GOD when he was praying! (Acts 10:1-33) NOTE: the exact time and day are mentioned here – at 3 O’clock and four days ago (v.30) The Angel tells him that his prayer is answered and that he must call for Simon Peter. The angel gives him the exact place with a detailed description, (to put it in today’s jargon: pins him the location); to find Peter! Meanwhile, Peter is alerted in a vision about the arrival of the men sent for him by Cornelius! These are signs that GOD is arranging the meeting. As Peter begins his witnessing, he translates his own vision and proclaims: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality.” (v.34) -So that anyone from any nation, who believes in the Good News is saved, once for all! Therefore, we are Called to BELIEVE!

Peter tells them how JESUS ate and drank with them after HIS Resurrection! The devil that Peter mentions in his testimony as an oppressor, today tries to lay siege of minds that could be cluttered or distracted! Many believing people are often attacked in this way! Let not the doubting ones lead us astray, as we live in a corrupted time! Our steadfast love for the LORD must Hold strong!

GOD works inhumanly unthinkable ways, to let HIS message be heard by those whom HE has called. Cornelius, a non-christian at that time was an instrument in GOD’S hands – because he was devout and generous.

Prayer: May we the believers, remain steadfast in Christ, His Life, Death, and Resurrection! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 118: 1-2, 16-17, 22-23

 JESUS Our Chief Cornerstone!

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the LORD’S doing it is marvellous in our eyes.” (v.22-23)

May we sing this canticle in faith and as a profession of the LORD’S Mighty deeds! Christ rose from the dead and lives today! Alleluia!!

Second Reading: Colossians 3: 1-4

Seek the Things that are above

“So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of GOD. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (v.2-3)

The self-explanatory verses today reveal our eligibility in the kingdom of GOD, -Because of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection! We are reminded to stay focused on the things that are above. Yet in a world bombarded with distractions at our fingertips, we must persevere towards our aim! I am personally often reminded of the young tech teen, Carlo Acutis, a boy of 15 who worked through the internet to evangelize!

Pray for us O Young Blessed Carlo Acutis. Amen!

Gospel: Mark 16: 1-7

HE has been Raised.

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. (v.1)

“But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him just as he told you.” (v.7)

I have always been wonder-struck at the courage of these little women! Some of them had been following the LORD on HIS road to Calvary and had seen where they had laid him! (Mark15:47) (Mt. 27:57-61) (Luke 24:1-12) (John 20:1-10)

The women displayed their Faith by their Courage to follow their LORD! They bought the spices in keeping with tradition and doing what was required of them. They didn’t know how they would open the tomb to get in, but they just took the step to do the needful. – A simple portrayal of ordinary actions taken by the women in faith and courage. Sometimes, that is all that is required of us! May we learn and try to emulate them. – For acting upon our faith needs courage. They were greeted by an already unrolled stone!- When GOD works HIS miracle, we don’t have to worry about stones blocking the entrance! The Little Women’s Faith and Courage is Rewarded with being the First Witnesses to Our LORD’S Resurrection! Mary Magdalene is the first to see the Risen Saviour! Before Peter and the other apostles! (John 20:11-18)

As they fled from the tomb carrying this Good News, the women were filled with amazement and terror. (v.8) I reckon the women would have been a bundle of bursting emotions, to say the least. For this event that the LORD had predicted during his lifetime with them, had indeed come true!! Just as we placed ourselves at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday, we could also imagine running alongside the Little Women! Their testimony would have been sealed and locked in their hearts, by the time they reached the apostles. -A conviction they bore because they had heard from the Angel about His Resurrection and the manner in which it had occurred. (Matthew 28:1-7)

Yet we are told, the apostles themselves did not believe them! (Luke 24:11) What are we to do when our own brothers, friends, and family doubt the convictions of our hearts? -Look to the Little Women of Calvary! They stood vindicated the day that the LORD himself appeared to his disciples and chastised them for their doubting! (Luke 24:36-40)

Prayer:  May we stand firm in the convictions of our hearts and learn to take the next small step in Faith. For, even when we do not know ‘How’, our ‘Why’ Must be secure. The LORD will provide us the answers to the ‘How’ we are to go about it! Amen!

Alleluia!!

Sunday Reflection – 28 March 2021

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’ Solemnity PASSION

Also Read: Mass Readings for 28 Mar 2021

First Reading: Isaiah 50: 4-7

Of Tongues and Ears!

“The LORD GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens – wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The LORD GOD has opened my ear and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. (v.4-5)

May we, who claim to be Christ’s disciples truly use our tongues and ears to the glory of GOD! Christ set us an example of teaching the GOSPEL by HIS Life and Listening to the WILL of the Father! When we awaken our dead selves to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in us; we hear HIS word in our ear! Then, we are to open our mouths to teach others! When we humble ourselves before the LORD, we are enriched with the boldness of CHRIST to Speak HIS Language! Let our tongues bring healing and our ears be obedient. Amen!

“Therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know I shall not be put to shame.” (v.7) Christ stood firm under the weight of the cross because HE knew the shaming was not going to overcome Him. -The CROSS was to be the SIGN of HIS Victory! May we remain Steadfast in Faith on our Passion Journey and offer it as an acceptable and pleasing sacrifice through LORD JESUS. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 22: 8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24

He delivers and Rescues

“Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver – let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”(v.8)

“Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the power of the dog!”(v.20)

When Our GOD sees our hearts, may HE see the humility in it! May HE then grant us the courage to tackle the earthly dogs prowling about to ruin us!

Second Reading: Philippians 2: 6-11

Humility Glorified

“So that at the name of JESUS every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth   and every tongue should confess that JESUS Christ is LORD to the GLORY of GOD the Father.”

(v.10-11)

CHRIST was in the form of GOD(v.6) but emptied Himself(v.7), therefore, GOD also highly exalted HIM! (v.9) Christ is the epitome of Humility, is glorified forever. The proud one was thrown out of heaven! (Is 14: 12-15; Rev 12: 1-17) CHRIST defeated him once for all! Every Knee on earth, above it and under it should bend at the name of JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth! We are given free will so that we should revere HIM freely – out of our own choice! That’s where we falter -in our choice! May we choose the right, just and good!  So that our hearts, souls, and spirit may proclaim the Name of JESUS, above every name! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 14: 1 – 15: 47

The Flint-Set Face of Today!

The Passion and death of Our LORD JESUS Christ!

Every year we commemorate the Passion of Christ and read this bible passage! All the three other Gospels also proclaim this event. Yet how much do we let the words sink into our spirit and soul? We may have memorized some of the verses too; but do we feel them in our hearts?

Beginning with the anointing at Bethany, to the last supper, the agony in the garden, the betrayal and denial, the trial, the condemnation, the mockery, the humiliating and painful walk to Calvary, and finally the crucifixion, death, and burial of JESUS; GOD’S plan is at work! Not one act, done by any of the people involved, is out of place or out of turn! CHRIST cooperates with GOD the Father, through HIS Absolute Submission to the Will of the Father.

The flint-set face is Christ’s through-out this ordeal. A face that shows compassion to the weeping women, Veronica, and HIS own mother on the way; is steadfast in the Mission HE must Accomplish! HE is this grain of wheat that is spoken about in the Gospel of John 12:24,  that must die to bring life to the world. A dead world needed the Eternal King to die, so that it may be brought back to Life! He gave up HIS life with Love in his pierced heart, for the hand that pierced it. That is our hand today! -The hand, which doesn’t rise for good, but immediately rises to strike! The hand which doesn’t rise to defend but to divide! We stand afar today, jeering at HIS bloodied body and mocking HIM, asking to save Himself just as HE had healed others! We bring up HIS good works to taunt Him! We insult our priests or preachers who even attempt at imitating him! Some of our priests languish in unjust custody at the very mercy of similar boorish crowds today! Some of our preachers are brought down by murderous slanderers!

Is GOD amongst us today? Do we Crucify Him even today?

The Spiritual Journey of the Holy Father Pope Francis

0

Pope Francis is one of the most well-known public figures globally, and his Catholic leadership is admired by many, regardless of religious affiliation. The life path that Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis’ birth name) has followed to become pope is quite inspiring and even a bit miraculous! He is the first Pope elected from the Southern Hemisphere and the Americas, and the first from the Jesuit order.

Pope Francis: A Life to Inspire

The boy who would one day become Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936, in Argentina, to humble beginnings. He worked as a janitor before studying chemistry and becoming a food science technician. As a young man, he contracted a severe and debilitating respiratory illness, and upon his recovery, he joined the Jesuits (also known as the Society of Jesus).

After years of religious education, community service, and training, in 1969, he became a Catholic priest, a role he humbly served in for nearly 30 years. It wasn’t until 1998 that he was named the Archbishop of Buenos Aires and then Cardinal in 2001. He served as Cardinal for over a decade until Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2013. It was then, at the age of 76, that the papal conclave elected him Pope.

How the Pope Got His Name

Bergoglio chose the name Francis because of his admiration for Saint Francis of Assisi. It marks the first time a Pope has taken that name. Much like his namesake, Pope Francis’ messages often focus on humility, prayer, God’s mercy, care for the marginalized and disadvantaged, and the importance of interfaith dialogue.

Unlike the Popes who came before him, Francis is less formal in how he lives each day. For example, he prefers to reside and receive visitors at the Vatican guesthouse instead of in the Palace apartment.

The Value of a Simple, Humble Life

To those from Argentina, these leadership and lifestyle choices are not surprising. Throughout the forty-five years he served as a priest, archbishop, and cardinal, he was known for his humility, commitment to the poor and social justice, and a conservative approach to the Catholic faith.

He was frequently seen taking public transportation instead of having a driver and enjoyed cooking his meals instead of having a housekeeper. He was also known for writing many letters into which he often enclosed a small card devoted to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, whom he considered a great example of how Catholics can devote themselves to the Lord.

Conservative but Not Traditional

As a Catholic conservative, Francis holds traditional views regarding contraception, celibacy for clerics, and women’s role in the church. He is also known for speaking out against rampant consumerism and advocates for environmental interventions to reverse climate change. While Pope Francis may espouse traditional Catholic values, he is not averse to embracing technology to reach a wider audience and connect with all people!

In 2016, Pope Francis’ Instagram account broke social media records within twelve hours, as millions of followers connected to his words and photographs. He frequently mentions the pros and cons of technology and urges people to use it as a means for good and to spread God’s love so that all might be liberated!
