What did God see in David’s Heart?

The curtain opens on many characters in the Bible with God anointing them with a specific mission although there is hardly any mention of why they were chosen in the first place. Why did he select Abraham or David or Gideon or several others? Sometimes the inference about God’s choice can be drawn after reading the subsequent pages of the Bible story.

For our study let us revisit the story of the renowned King David of Israel. Even though the nation of Israel was governed by numerous rulers, no other king in Israel’s history holds as much honor and esteem as King David, the second king of Israel. Despite the grave mistakes he committed in his later years, God never took his kingship away as he had done with Saul. Moreover, God established a covenant with David confirming his everlasting dynasty (2 Samuel 7:8-19).

Many centuries before Christ’s birth, the prophet Isaiah had prophesied about the spiritual connection between the coming Messiah and King David – His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom.  He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onwards and forevermore (Isaiah 9:7). In fact, there are many references to Jesus and David made by the New Testament writers. Luke mentions that Jesus was born of David’s lineage (chapter 1:27) in the city of David (chapter 2:11). The angel Gabriel foretold Mary that Jesus would receive the throne of His ancestor David (chapter 1:33). Jesus is addressed by many Davidic titles- son of David by Matthew (chapter 1:1), a descendant of David by Paul (2 Timothy 2:8), and the root of David in Revelations 5:5.

So, who was this king and why was he chosen?

Certainly not at random!! The story of David in the Bible begins with God commanding the prophet Samuel to visit Bethlehem and anoint David as the next king. Saul’s act of disobedience had displeased God and it would eventually cost the first king of Israel his throne. The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ (1 Samuel 16:1).

When Prophet Samuel visited Jesse’s house, he was certain it would be one of the athletic, handsome, warrior sons of Jesse who would replace Saul as king. David’s father too presented his seven older sons before the prophet. It was only when Samuel prodded- Are all your sons here? (1 Samuel 16:11) that Jesse admitted that the youngest one was away in the field taking care of the sheep. David seemed insignificant even in His father’s eyes!!

Yet there was something that God noticed in young David’s heart which pleased Him as he told Samuel-for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). God overlooked David’s tender age and instead focused on his heart and knew that this young, unskilled boy had the potential and the requisite qualities to be the future king of Israel.

So, what did God see in David’s heart?

1. Faithfulness to his vocation

God saw a person faithful to the duty assigned to him. David was entrusted with the simple task of caring for the sheep which he fulfilled to the hilt.

Reflection

What about us? How do we discharge our daily duties? Do we carry on with our tasks grudgingly or simply hurry off with our assignments for the sake of finishing them off? Will it matter to us if the end result is shoddy? Is it out of fear of those in authority that we complete our responsibilities or are we truly at peace with our God-given occupation, knowing that our heavenly master is watching us all the time? Colossians 3:23-24 speaks of the work attitude that Christians must cultivate-Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  God expects faithfulness from us. Jesus emphasized it through his teachings. “The one who would be faithful in little would also be faithful in much” he said (Luke 16:10). David was faithful with his simple assignment as a keeper of sheep; God elevated him to be the ruler of Israel!

2. Love for his sheep

God noticed a person who cared for his flock even at the cost of his life. When faced with dangers, young David could have justifiably run away rather than risking his dear life for some ordinary, insignificant sheep. Instead, we hear him tell Saul, ‘Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it(1 Samuel 17:34-35)

Reflection

What about us? Do we genuinely care about the sheep, the vulnerable people God has placed in our lives? Are we like good shepherds to them, protecting them, guiding them, lending a listening ear when they need us or helping them in their spiritual growth?  Or do we find pleasure in controlling their lives, dominating and manipulating them? If we have difficulty tending to the sheep in our homes, why would God entrust us with responsibilities in his kingdom, for does not love (charity) begin at home?

3. Love and Zeal for God

God noticed sincerity and love in David’s devotion to him. Even as a youth, David loved and honored God with all his heart. On the battlefield, when Goliath brazenly blasphemed God, David could not bear to hear the giant speak ill of God; he asked indignantly “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:26. None of the mighty trained warriors had the nerve to silence Goliath, yet David in spite of his youth and lack of military training, readily stood up for God and took the giant Goliath head on.  1 Samuel 17:36-Your servant has killed both lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, David told Saul.

Reflection

David was zealous for God. He cared greatly for God’s glory and honor than his dear life. How zealous are we for God and for His kingdom? Are we ready to defend our faith in case the occasion so demands? Have we placed God at the center of our lives? As Christian, does our love and zeal manifest in our daily life? Let us take St. Paul’s advice to heart-Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. (Romans 12:11)

4. Faith and trust in God

God also noticed a person who trusted him. David was confident that God would deliver him from the giant Goliath’s hand just as he had rescued him from fierce animals on several occasions in the past. David confidently told Saul, “The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37)

Reflection

How do we react when we encounter Goliaths unexpectedly in our lives- financial crisis, relationship problems, or health complications? When our faith is tested, do we despair, or do we display trust as David did; that with the Lord’s help we will conquer and defeat these giants plaguing us? As children of our heavenly Father, may we also cultivate an attitude like David who said, “I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved” (Psalms 16:8)

5. A peaceable and forgiving spirit

God noticed David’s peaceable spirit. Being the youngest in the family, David must have often been pushed around, scolded, and bullied as can be seen from the following incident- Once, when David was sent to the battlefield by his father to minister to his brothers who were part of Saul’s army, he received a severe admonition from his brother. His eldest brother Eliab heard him talking to the men, and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David. He said, ‘Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart; for you have come down just to see the battle.’ (1 Samuel 17:28) Even before ascertaining the facts, Eliab, his brother spoke bluntly to Him. Yet David did not take offense and replied peacefully to the rather rude remark of his brother. Nor did it deter him from the task that lay ahead. David tried to constantly put insults past him and maintain his composure.

Reflection

What would be our response if we were to face a similar situation as David did? Do we believe hitting back verbally at people who insult us or speak to us disrespectfully is the ideal solution? In our service for building God’s kingdom, differences, and misunderstandings will surface from time to time. Are we willing to bury past hurts and focus on the task of working in God’s vineyard? God wants peacemakers like David and not space makers!!

Conclusion

My dear brothers and sisters, God did not reveal to Prophet Samuel what he had seen in David’s heart or why he had chosen him instead of Saul or David’s older brothers? Through the subsequent events recorded in scriptures, specifically on the day he fought Goliath; David’s exemplary character came to the forefront. But God had been observing these beautiful traits, no doubt insignificant in the eyes of the worldly-wise; and he chose him to rule over his people although David possessed no athletic or combative skills, a prerequisite for a person destined to inherit a royal throne!!

God is constantly on the lookout for people with the right heart attitude as David. He is not interested in the Abhinadabs, Shammahs, or Elias’s (David’s brothers) of this world to build his kingdom. Do you consider yourself least in your household or ignored or taken for granted? Do you consider yourself a failure? Is life treating you unfairly? Continue doing what is right in God’s eyes. Try to find out what pleases God (Ephesians 5:10) and seek to do God’s will in the daily situations of our life as David did. If you think that the tasks you handle are too mundane for God to even notice, remember that David was merely ‘keeping his sheep’ the day God anointed him through Prophet Samuel.

The Bible is replete with stories of ordinary men and women whom God picked up from obscurity and used them to play a key role in salvation history. Mary, the humble virgin of Nazareth was chosen to be the mother of his son, God used Gideon, the least significant member of the weakest clan in Israel, to deliver his people from the oppression of the Midianites. God chose Joseph, who suffered unjustly at the hands of his brothers, to become the prime minister of Egypt, through Esther an orphaned Jewish maiden, a nation was saved from annihilation by their enemies.

Those whom God has chosen; he also equips!! In His time, God will bring you to the place he has in mind just as he eventually brought David to the throne of Israel.

My dear brothers and sisters, God is looking at the condition of our hearts. May he be well pleased with what he sees!!

First Reading: Jeremiah 31: 31-34

The Happy Forecast!

The days are coming says the LORD, when there will be no more need to tell people to know the LORD! How truly amazing those days will be!! When Every man, woman, and child will already be in the LORD! Amen!

That day, The LORD will put His law within us and write it on our hearts!! (v.33) How truly wonderful that day would be true! Just the thought of this day makes one delightedly hopeful of the future! On such ironically gloomy days, the mere mention of these events might seem unbelievable. But to the faithful disciple, this augurs the arrival of the eternal world of Justice, Truthfulness, and Goodness! We who thus speak now will be mocked at for sure! – Fear not; for Noah too was mocked in like fashion!

Our Ark is our Mother Church, whose foundations have been laid down in our hearts through JESUS Christ’s Death and Resurrection! Therefore, we the Believers look forward with joy to the Prospect of this new covenant and the new world that the Good LORD has promised us today!

Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 51: 3-4, 12-13, 14-15

The Pardoning Petition

This most famous psalm of penitence; serves us as a reminder about our transgressions and justifies our punishment! Yet God in his unfathomable love and mercy restores us to salvation! We do not add one iota of significance to GOD the Almighty Father; when we perform any works of mercy! – In fact, these are merely our response to GOD’S supreme Love for us! He asks us to repay him in our neighbor; in whom he is as present as, HE is in Us! Amen!

Second Reading: Hebrews 5: 7-9

Reverent Submission

The priest makes the offering every day, but Christ our Eternal High Priest has made the ultimate sacrifice for us once and for all! -Therefore we are Redeemed! “Reverent Submission” (v.7) -this phrase stands out today as a beacon for us travelers! Do we show reverence to GOD? Are we submissive in our behavior to him? Christ modeled this life of reverent submission for us! We are to live like him like sons of the Highest God and King – in Reverent Submission to The King and not Cowering to the Deceitful!! Amen!

Gospel: John 12: 20-33

The Wheat that Dies!

“Very Truly I tell you unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain, but if it dies it bears much fruit.” (v.24)

“Whoever serves me must follow me and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.” (v.26)

As we prepare ourselves for the Holy Week commencing with the Palm Sunday next week; we are reminded today by Christ himself of the impending event! At this point, Christ already has had the anointing of his feet (John 12:1-8)! He proclaims there about the future use of the remaining nard! (John 12:7) Thereby, prophesying his own death and burial! The subsequent verses (John 12:12-19) reveal HIS Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem during the festival. It is as part of this festival that the Greeks had arrived there and had sought to see JESUS! We are told in the later verses not included in the reading today that Christ had departed from there and hid from them! (John12:37)

But today’s gospel focuses on Christ’s description of HIS End! (v.27-33) Yet, as he shares the analogy of the wheat grain(v.24), we are reminded of the purpose of his journey! – The death of the grain brings forth much fruit. This is food for the hungry and life for the starving! Is Christ our food? Do we get our nourishment from him? Are we willing to stand in reverent submission to GOD’S Will! ( Heb 5:7) So that dying to our worldly nature we may rise to our divine self!

“Where I am, there will my servant be also.”(v.26) Where is Christ? Are we serving HIM? If we truly do serve HIM, we will know Where HE is!! It is our heart that is tested for its sincerity, not the works we perform! ‘Cause, we could ‘perform’ to a gallery and yet be unbelieving like the Greeks.

Then Christ tells us that the voice that spoke in verse 28, was a sign from GOD! (v.30) -So that the people gathered there might believe! Would we believe, had we been at the festival that day? May we Believe, Repent, and Glorify GOD! Amen!

Help us O LORD to be vigilant and steady in faith! Mother Mary Pray for us, Amen! Thank You, LORD, Praise GOD!

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT, Second Scrutiny of the Elect

Also Read: Mass Readings for 14 Mar 2021

First Reading: First Samuel 16: 1b, 6-7, 10-13a

The Chosen

“JESUS said to him(Thomas): “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe!” (John 20: 29)

Why is JESUS being mentioned here in this reflection on the Old Testament!?! -Because it’s All About JESUS and it’s All Connected From Genesis through to Revelation. The Message of the Word of God is the same! More on that later!

Meanwhile, Christ spoke there about those who had faith without even seeing! Although instantly we think it is us, HE is referring to; but today’s First Reading, gives us another one of those too! -Jesse! Even as the Prophet Samuel kept on rejecting each one of his seven sons; Jesse kept faith in Samuel’s proclamations! Jesse is the root of David, who turns out to be the ancestor of Christ’s human incarnation! For his faithfulness, GOD Blessed Jesse with such a great honor; even Jesse wouldn’t have dreamt of it!

Therefore, the ancestor of Christ today teaches us faith before “Seeing”! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 23: 1-6

The Shepherd King!

In keeping with his ministry of herding the sheep, David sings this psalm. Even as we live our lives here on earth as in the presence of God; we realize Heaven on earth!! -In those little moments of awareness when we see HIM as HE is: Light of the World, Shepherd of HIS Sheep and Saviour of us all; We are granted a glimpse into HIS eternal world. Amen!

Second Reading: Ephesians 5: 8-14

The Children

“For once you were darkness, but now in the LORD you are light. Live as children of Light-for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.” (v.8)

“For everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper awake! Rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you.” (v.14)

St. Paul in this beautiful passage, tells us that we are children of LIGHT! Therefore as Children of Light, we ought to live in this Light. We can measure our faithfulness in our daily lives by introspecting our thoughts, words, and actions. Our thoughts need to be set on all things Good, Right, and True. Thus through our, now filtered thoughts, we are then able to control the words we speak. When our thoughts and words are sanctified our actions follow suit. Just as an example: when we decide to wake up earlier and go for that jog; when we return, we naturally pick up a healthier food/drink – almost an automatic consequence! It is because we have decided in our heart and mind to pick up healthier habits, that’s all!

We are then extolled to rise literally from our slumbers of various kinds and let the Sun of Christ shine on us! We slumber in attitudes of pride, ignorance, disobedience, foolishness, and many such as these! If only we allow the Light of the World to step into our darkness, when we invite HIM every morning, we would be sure of this experience! We know HE is in our boat and yet succumb to fear! (Mark 4:35-41) Today all of us, are in great need of Faith and in a greater need of Earnestly Calling out to HIM. Fr. Joseph Edattu, Divine Retreat Centre-UK; once said, “Christ is a gentleman; HE awaits you to invite HIM into your boat, to go and ask HIM to save you!” Hence Invite HIM into your hearts and HE will turn the barrenness into a banquet!

“For everything that becomes visible to us,”(v.14) When we contemplate at least a few minutes in solitude with the LORD, we are given this vision; in the presence of HIS Light! We must immerse ourselves in the word of GOD daily too! “Indeed, the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow, it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Heb 4:12) It is in the piercing light of the Word that our heart, thought, mind, spirit, and soul are rendered clear to see! We will then hear HIM speak too! Then, it is in our hearts that we know we will Rise with HIM! Amen!

Gospel: John 9: 1-41

The LIGHT and the Enlightened!

“As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.” (v.5)

“We know that GOD doesn’t listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his Will.” (v.31)

“If this man were not from GOD, he could do nothing.” (v.33)

“JESUS said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.”(v.39)

There are several aspects we could reflect upon in this entire chapter! First, we look at Christ! We hear HIM proclaim that HE is The LIGHT of the World!! Do we recognize this fact? Or are we in slumbering ignorance as alluded by St. Paul in the second reading? Only our faith can save us here!

Then, we see how the little, blind beggar, born sightless defends, argues, and tries to reason with the Pharisees. The hard-hearted Pharisees even summon his parents in an attempt to prove him wrong! There is a gutsy and robust counterargument by the young man in response to the long-drawn investigation! “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Eph.5:11) This man works on this principle laid down by St. Paul! Having been born blind, once he is cured; the man is able to see through the schemes of the conniving Pharisees. It is his grit and courage that stands out today as a consequence of his enlightenment! In his final and compelling statement in (v.33), the man has literally won the case!

Summing up this episode is CHRIST’S Proclamation in verse 39! Therefore, the blind and probably little-educated beggar is able to take on the so-called “Religious Stalwarts” of his time with gusto! The Blind man had humility, backed by courage and uncanny wisdom to be able to SEE; what the ‘Wide-Eyed Hawks’ couldn’t grasp even with all the ‘pompous knowledge’ they had acquired!

The Wisdom we acquire must be backed by our humility and courage! -Humility to know that we Do not Know it All!    And Courage to be able “to expose unfruitful works of darkness”! We must start this process, First within our own selves! May we SEE by the Light of CHRIST!

Help us O LORD to be vigilant and steady in faith! Mother Mary Pray for us, Amen! Thank You, LORD, Praise GOD!

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT, First Scrutiny of the Elect

Also Read: Mass Readings for 07 Mar 2021

First Reading: Exodus 20: 1-17

Matters of the Heart!

Our generation today is plagued with covetousness! In our hearts, we covet others for their good looks, the things they possess, the house/car they own, the family life they seem to enjoy, the good job/business they appear to hold down! We truly have turned into a perverse people, I daresay resembling the Sodom and Gomorrah of Old! For it is in our hearts that we covet first, then we go about trying to satisfy our own desires!

The 9th and 10th Commandments hold the seed of the previous commandments, beginning with #5,6,7, and 8! It is in the jealousy of his heart that Cain committed the first murder! (Gen 4:8) When we try to satisfy our own desires, without relying on GOD for them; we fall into the trap! “The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse who can understand it.” (Jer 17:9) The Prophet exclaims this so beautifully here! Once we murder, steal or commit adultery, we attempt to cover it all up by bearing false witness! The evil seed of corrupt desire germinates in us: murderous schemes in our hearts and without uttering a word we commit adultery with our eyes!!

Then again Solomon admonishes us: “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Prov. 4:23)  A King who had it all, much more than any other on this earth; knew exactly what temptations meant and the efforts needed to stand firm! Therefore, We Must Keep A VIGILANT Eye on our hearts’ Desires!

It would be good practice for us in this Season to read this particular passage once again, examine our conscience, and reflect on how we fare in the areas mentioned therein!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 19: 8, 9, 10, 11

Rules and Rewards.

Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.” (v.11)

The LORD gave us the commandments not to penalize or constrict us, but rather as a beacon for us to remain safe! As verse 8 says in keeping the precepts of the LORD, our Heart rejoices.

Second Reading: First Corinthians 1: 22-25

A Sign for the Fool and the Wise!

“For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom.”(v.22) “For GOD’S foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and GOD’S Weakness is Stronger than human strength.” (v.25)

We humans, with all our frailties and foolishness, still dare have the audacity to demand from GOD- signs! For those looking down upon the Crucified CHRIST, A Church that has been around for 2000+ years must signify ample evidence of GOD’S work! Yet, we the people, having advanced technologically, an attempt at finding the ‘GOD particle’ and fail miserably! How truly and utterly foolish of us! Just because we cannot stand to have faith in CHRIST’S death and Resurrection, we try to masquerade as a ‘developed’ species and fall flat in this regard.

Consider the fact that GOD HIMSELF has created each tiniest of the tiniest molecule of the entire universe! -How are we to fathom any of his workings? It is only through faith that we can make sense of the world as we see it and the eternal world that beckons to our internal selves ever so often!

As a species, we are wise yet we MUST remember that no matter how much progress we might achieve; we are truly foolish without GOD! We serve a Living GOD who is in us and among us, by the Power of the Holy Spirit! The Spirit that covered the formless earth before it was formed. (Gen: 1:1-2) It is the same breath of GOD that lives in us! Therefore, without GOD we can do nothing – no scientific bounds nor developmental leaps! Higgs or no – unless we have been called as HIS People; we are doomed to remain in our folly!

Hence, the fact that we are reading this right now points to an invitation sent out to us; -Here is ‘the Calling’! (v.24) – A call to Repentance, A call to Faith, and A Call to Living! Are we Listening? If we are truly HIS sheep, we will hear HIS Voice!

Gospel: John 2: 13-25

The Silverware!

After having cleansed the temple, CHRIST is confronted by the JEWS! As they demand a sign from HIM, HE foretells HIS own death and resurrection! Yet, at that moment their mind was blinded to the presence of God among them there! HIS disciples only remember HIS words after HIS Ressurection.

If CHRIST were to enter the temples within us today, what would HE find? Would HE need to drive away any greedy money changers from within us? Or perhaps some crooked sellers? Maybe even some lecherous idolators?

What cords would HE use? -The rod of disciplined Listening and The whip of commandments meant to prod us onto the right paths! We could start cleansing our own selves in this purification period; without having to await HIS physical arrival, cord in hand! Purging and pruning is a difficult and sometimes long-drawn process! Yet we ought to endure the whiplashes and knocks on our heads sometimes if we are to be refined as silver or gold! Now, wouldn’t that be a Wonderful Prospect! As vessels of the Holy Spirit, we stand an opportunity to be made worthy Silverware of the LORD!

Help us O LORD to be vigilant and steady in faith! Mother Mary Pray for us, Amen! Thank You, LORD, Praise GOD!

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Also Read: Mass Readings for 28 Feb 2021

First Reading: Genesis 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18

The Faith!

“And by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have  obeyed my voice.” (v.18)

Abraham showed his great faith in offering his son Issac! But GOD saved him and restored and blessed him! Even as we ponder on this amazing passage, we wonder whether Abraham would have even uttered a slightest of murmur; after all, this was an extremely tough command of the LORD! The very fact that GOD so profusely blessed him and his generations after him stand witness to his undeniable and unwavering faith in GOD’S Command! Would we have stood this test?

It is in the obedience of one man (Abraham) that GOD blesses all nations to come. May we hear GOD’S voice and always turn our steps to his will. Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 116: 10, 15, 16-17, 18-19

Doing what Faith commands me!

I kept my faith, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.” (v.10)

Like Father Abraham, may we stay strong in our faith through the very midst of afflictions, temptations, and trials! Amen!

Second Reading: Romans 8: 31b-34

GOD is With Us!

“If GOD be for us, who can be against us.” (v. 31)

GOD gave us his own Son and along with HIM everything else! All that we need to stand firm in our faith towards the Highest GOD, we have received it. We must claim the blessings! As we praise HIM in our storms, HE continues to give us the graces we seek! Amen!

Gospel: Mark 9: 2-10

The SON Shining!

“This is my son, the beloved, listen to him!” (v.7) As Christ interacts with the heavenly beings, HE is naturally revealed in his true light! -A splendor witnessed by his closest ones! The scriptures report of other times, Christ goes by himself to pray in silence! Would there have been similar occurrences then? – I would rather think so! It so happens that on this occasion; the three Peter, James, and John are able to witness this sight! How blessed they would have felt! Though they were terrified, they would have experienced the Glory of GOD that night!

Upon our own encounter with GOD, what would we have done? Would we be able to come down that mountain easily, knowing what lies ahead might be difficult? I for one would have replicated Peter’s request for sure! In the presence of the Blessed Sacrament during Holy Communion or Adoration, we are offered this glimpse of heaven every day! Do we allow our eyes to See? -To do so, we need our hearts to be clear! Christ is Transfigured Daily before our eyes, May we See this phenomenon!

And then when in any dilemma, go up the LORD’S mountain and speak with the Law and Prophets. For this, we need to seek the scriptures for True Wisdom, Guidance, Strength, and Courage. Worship the LORD in Spirit and in Truth!

Thank You LORD, Praise GOD!

Sunday Reflection – 21 February 2021

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Also Read: Mass Readings for 21 Feb 2021

First Reading: Genesis 9: 8-15

The Sign of GOD’S Covenant with man.

“God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you. And with every living creature that is with you, the birds the domestic animals and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark.”(v.8-10)

“Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”(v.11)

I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. (v.13)

Although man sinned and deserved punishment, GOD set up a covenant with the man! What is the man that GOD must care for? Man is GOD’S own creation, the work of HIS Love! In his infinite Love and Mercy, HE saves us all the time, every time! Amen!

“I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh;  and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh”.(v.15)

This passage provides us a beautiful reminder of GOD’S Love for creation! The next time we see the rainbow in the sky, we must pause to recollect the great mercies of the LORD on us! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 25: 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

Want to know His Plan? -Read His word, Hear His voice!

Make me to know your ways O LORD; teach me your paths.(v.4)

It is when we mend our ways and bend our wills to GOD’s plan; GOD blesses us with HIS instructions and that is the beginning of our Wisdom! Apart from God, we could never have true Wisdom!

GOD leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way. (v.9)

Therefore, it is only when we humble ourselves before the Lord, that we gain Wisdom! The Lord is All-Powerful, Creator of the Universe; we ought to humble ourselves before him. In his great Love and Mercy, He has saved us and set a covenant of protection over us. We could learn about His ways if we were to daily and diligently read His Holy Word the Bible!

Amen!

Second Reading: First Peter 3: 18-22

Redemption by The Water and The Spirit!

“For  Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to GOD. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” (v.18)

These words from our First Pope, who lived with the LORD himself; are so powerful! Once for all, JESUS redeemed us! Christ came to the earth as true GOD and True man and bore our sins to the Cross! HE didn’t need to! -YET HE Loved us so much! JESUS is our Victorious Champion Already! And what is the requirement for us to enter into HIS celebratory banquet? – “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Mt.4:17) The King’s own son came here, HE brought HIS kingdom to us and laid out the banquet for us! Are we willing to let go of our little comforts, our pride, our laziness, etc for the sake of an entry into HIS banquet?

“God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark…” (v.20)

The fact that ‘GOD waited patiently’ for the redemption of HIS people (8 on the Ark) is an astounding thought! Again, HE didn’t need to wait then! -HE doesn’t need to wait for us to board HIS Ark! YET HE WAITS! For the creatures, HE lovingly formed, in HIS own image and likeness – The ones who knowingly keep losing their tracks! It is about time we navigate our boats toward HIS ARK!

“…an appeal to God for good conscience, through the resurrection of JESUS CHRIST.” (v.21)

Here, the Baptism in CHRIST is pre-figured by St. Peter -as the floods at Noah’s time were a cleansing of the earth. We have been cleansed in the Baptism of JESUS CHRIST, by Water and by Spirit! Therefore, a purged spirit will employ a good conscience -A fruit of its healing and cleansing! Do we believe that we are Healed, Saved, and Washed Clean? Do our actions then,  Spring from a ‘good conscience’!?

Praise GOD!

Gospel: Mark 1: 12-15

A Lesson in Spiritual Warfare!

“And the Spirit immediately drove HIM out into the wilderness.” (v.12)

Just prior to this passage (v.9-11); we see Christ’s baptism with water and the Spirit descending on HIM. -The spirit was with him in his testing times! May we remember this in our wilderness too! In enduring the drive into the wilderness, Christ symbolizes the original punishment of Adam and Eve! But the vital difference here is that HE was in the Holy Spirit and teaches us Important lessons in dealing with the devil. In Matthew’s version of this episode (Mt.4:1-11), we read how JESUS battled the deceit of the evil one with quotes from the book of Deuteronomy. Therefore, we now have a model to follow in times of temptations. This is why reading the Holy Bible daily must be our utmost priority.

Because of our meandering ways, we might have to persevere in our 40 days a little longer in human time; but we sure do know how we ought to handle it now! -So, Read and Repeat! Amen!

Thank You LORD, Praise GOD!

Sunday Reflection – 14 February 2021

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Also Read: Mass Readings for 14 Feb 2021

First Reading: Leviticus 13: 1-2, 44-46

The Rules for leprous people.

(v.45) “The person who has the leprous disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head be disheveled; and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, “Unclean, unclean.”

Chapters 13-14 in the book of Leviticus give an account of all the rules and procedures to be followed by leprous people. GOD speaks to Moses and Aaron and gives them these instructions beginning in verses 13:1-2. Here the affected person must come to Aaron or one of his sons, the priests, and show themselves. There seems to be a certain sense of resonance in the sacrament of the reconciliation here; just as we go to the priest with our wounded and contrite hearts! When the priest recommends a penance to us in the confessional, we ought to follow the same in faith.

Then in (v.45), it is very interesting to see how the person must proclaim his uncleanliness to others around too! Therefore when our hearts are diseased with any sort of sin, it is apt that we proclaim our unworthiness before the LORD and his people. (For e.g.) By attending the Holy Eucharist in faith and with a repentant spirit.

Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 32: 1-2, 5, 11 (7)

(v.5) “Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

May we believe and repent with a contrite heart, so that we do not repeat the same offenses! Amen!

Second Reading: First Corinthians 10: 31 – 11: 1

1Cor 10: 31 “So whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the Glory of GOD.”

So, then picking up from the first reading today, if we are truly repentant; we will renew our minds and our ways. It is an ongoing process and no single person can vouch for having accomplished this perfectly! -Because we are human, we will have shortcomings! But we are to persistently show our repentance in our active daily living! We need to then turn our minds and thoughts over to The Holy Spirit to help us walk in this renewed way of life!

1Cor 10: 32 “Give no offense to anyone, do not seek your own advantage but the advantage of many, so they may be saved.”

Now, this is a tough call; agreed! But we as true disciples of Christ, ought to endeavor in this regard. Through the promptings of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Our Dear Mother Mary; we will!

1Cor 11 : 1 “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”

“Imitating Christ?” super tough! -If we rely solely on our own strength! In everything submit to GOD and HE will lay straight the paths for you!! See Prov 3: 5-6!

Yes, we can Dear Brothers and Sisters; because we are in the likeness and image of GOD! (Gen 1:27) Amen!

Gospel: Mark 1: 40-45

JESUS cleanses a leper.

“Moved with pity, JESUS stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” (v.41)

Would the leper have asked for forgiveness? Would JESUS have ‘Seen’ his contrite heart? The passage doesn’t mention here! The same miracle is accounted for in Mt. 8:1-4 and Luke 5:12-16, but there isn’t any specific mention about the man asking for mercy in those texts either! Yet, there seems to be an underlying message of repentance in his pleading for deliverance.

“Jesus saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest,  and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” (v.44)

When HE had already cleansed him; WHY does Christ JESUS tell him to go to the priest!?? Christ also tells him to follow the standard norms of purification! -So that GOD’S Word is fulfilled, and Christ obeys GOD’S commandment given in Leviticus 13:2 !! It is truly amazing how Christ shows us the way! There was a system in place at that time as a standard practice of purification and Christ directs this healed man towards it! Therefore, God has set our rules and procedures to maintain order in our lives! We ought to adhere to them!

“But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word…”

Have we been healed in any area of our lives; Spiritually or otherwise?! We must follow this healed leper in his proclamation! In the First Reading, we hear how lepers used to proclaim they were unclean (Leviticus13:45); whereas here, the healed man now goes about proclaiming his cleansing! There would have been an immeasurable joy in his steps as he ran to the priests! On the way, he would have been testifying with his words and recounting his cleansing! It would have been quite an event!

How do we thank the LORD for HIS great mercies on us? Have we not been healed? This faith that we carry inside of us, is it not spiritual healing? Unless we have been designed by the Highest GOD, we would never have turned our steps to HIM! As St. Paul tells us then, (1Cor 10:31) Can we show our gratitude to God for this great favor? Yes, we can! By our every word and action in our own daily lives, we must persevere in giving GOD the Glory HE is due! By doing what is just and right and good!

So then, just like we would have grumbled earlier about our lot; now that we have been redeemed, we ought to freely testify to our blessings daily! Amen!

Thank You LORD, Praise GOD!

Sunday Reflection – 24 January 2021

Third Sunday in ordinary time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 24 Jan 2021

First Reading: Jonah 3: 1-5, 10

(v.1) “The word of GOD came to Jonah a second time…”

We too are like this, we wait for the LORD to call out to us again; even after living in the belly of a fish for three days! In our weakest moments and times of suffering, we know GOD and run to him. But the moment we are relieved of the issue, we gladly turn around our boats and run away from the Ninvehs of our lives!

There could be several different reasons for this, ranging from sloth, greed, selfishness, etc. Once we overcome these vices, we are able to seek his face and follow his command! No, it never was easy for Mama Mary and the other saints! They hardly had any recognition in their lifetimes, with a few exceptions. It would be better to hear the LORD say on that Day: “Well done good and faithful servant, enter into my kingdom.” Mt. 25:21 Rather than eat the bread of anxious toil (Ps 127:2) and waste away our gifts!

(v.4) “Jonah began to go into the city going a day’s walk. And he cried out “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.”Are we in our 40-Day period already? Do we hear the Jonahs of today crying out to us? Or perhaps are we called to be the Jonahs of today? “O that today you would listen to his voice, harden not your hearts.” Heb 3:7-8 and 4:7

Then we may never know whether GOD averts the calamity.-(v.10) “GOD changed his mind about the calamity…”.We may never know! Permit us O LORD to do what you have ordained us to do.” Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 25: 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 (4a)

(v.4) “Make me to know your ways O LORD; teach me your paths.”

(v.8-9) “Good and upright is the LORD, therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way.” Help us to be humble O LORD! Bend our will to your ways O LORD!

Second Reading: First Corinthians 7: 29-31

(v.29) “The appointed time has grown shorter…” (v.31) “For the present form of this world is passing away.” Then staying with the same thought if we are already in the 40-Day period, What could we do?! Must we run scared? Must we be horrified by the happenings around us today and stay numbed? Not at all! On the contrary, we have a clear manual of instructions!

JESUS Himself revealed to us about That Day’ in Luke 17:31 and Mt.24 :3-31. Might we to read what is plainly written for us to see, we wouldn’t be worried one bit; leave alone horrified. Faith takes Courage and it must be actively lived in our thoughts, words, and actions. Without deeds our faith is dead. “So faith by itself, if it has no works is dead.” (James 2:7) So we must be doing what we always do, Keep doing good! We don’t need to worry then!

Therefore, we must not be deceived and run helter-skelter after false prophets on that day (today). Because The LORD will flash as bright as the lightning from the East to the West! (Mt 24:27) We must keep Alert at All Times! There is one solution implied in Mt. 24:13 “.. love of many will grow cold.” If we endure in love until the end, Only Love will save us!

Gospel: Mark 1: 14-20

“JESUS calls the First Disciples”

(v.17) And JESUS said to them: “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”

Therefore, we in our different professions can follow HIM! Whether teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers or be it any profession, wherever we are; however we are – We ought to proclaim Christ! By our very lives, we can emit his life in us!

Andrew and Simon, their partners James and John -The First Four were busy people! They had loads of responsibilities on their hands! Yet they immediately followed HIM.  What if JESUS were to suddenly appear on the shores of our Lives today and Beckon to us?  Could we start with the details, of how we go about our day? Could we bring about a change in our attitude? Seeing the change in us we are bound to resonate the same in others around us too! ‘Coz if we believe we are disciples, we ought to emulate Our Leader! It is when we crucify our arrogance, greed, sloth, etc; daily that we arise to a New Life Every Morning, triumphant with our Saviour!

Thank You, LORD, for revealing your scriptures to us. Make us worthy, fill our minds and convert our spirits! Cover our face from evil! Permit us to walk by your light! Amen!

Praise GOD!

Sunday Reflection – 17 January 2021

Second Sunday in ordinary time

Also Read: Mass Readings for 17 Jan 2021

First Reading: First Samuel 3: 3b-10, 19

We read today, how Samuel is called by God, and Eli guides the boy on how to go about it! But, let us also look at how Samuel got there in the first place! It’s through his mother Hannah!

If we go back just a bit further in the same book of First Samuel: 1 and 2, we learn about Hannah being barren. She had been praying and weeping to the Lord (1 Sam 1:10) and how she made and honored her vow of consecrating the male child; when the LORD had Blessed her with Samuel. The prayer, perseverance, and sacrifice stemming from an abounding faith of the simple woman are commendable and imitable!

May we adults respect and accept with grace, the responsibility of guiding and nurturing the young people in our care; towards the LORD’S Will! Amen!

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 40: 2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10 (8a, 9a)

(v.2) “The LORD drew me up from the desolate pit out of the miry bog and set my feet upon a rock making my steps secure.”

Like Hannah, The LORD secures our steps; provided we place our faith in the Word of God as our Rock!

Second Reading: First Corinthians 6: 13c-15a, 17-20

(v.20) “You were bought with a price, therefore glorify GOD in your body.”

Those very words must be enough for us to turn away from any sins we commit through our bodies! If we ever attend the Holy Eucharist with faith, then we ask the Dear LORD himself to dwell in us! How is it then alright for us to mistreat this vessel which carries the Saviour himself?

We could start our introspection by responding to St. Paul’s questions: “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? (v.15)

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from GOD and that you are not your own?” (v.19)

Therefore, then what is our Reply? St. Paul gives us a simple antidote! “Shun fornication!” (v.18) All things that we do with our bodies, must glorify GOD! But what have we ended up doing? Beginning with gluttony and drunkenness, sloth and slumbering, tattooing and piercing(disfiguring our bodies), greed and avarice, we have let ourselves walk into the premises for evil to take up space in us! Leading us onto sexual immoralities beginning with porn and so on! A little slip here, a little slide there, and soon there is an addiction to pleasure ourselves in ways that lead us further into the traps of sin.

Agreed, in a world mired with all the possible nonsense to drive us down this road to hell; it can be quite difficult to stand out from the crowd and make a choice! “But Take Courage I have conquered the world.” John 16:33 – Christ’s words to his apostles before his passion and crucifixion! Christ JESUS won us or bought us at the dearest price of all, once and for all! We needn’t be deceived!

“Little Children, you are from GOD and have conquered them. For the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Believe and Be Blest! Amen!

Gospel: John 1: 35-42

The First Disciples”

St. John the Baptist points out JESUS, to two of his own disciples. They in turn follow Christ and ask to see where he lives. One of them, Andrew than in turn goes and gets his brother Simon Peter to JESUS. On seeing him, Christ calls him “Cephas” upon which HE would build his church! John1:42 – Amazing, isn’t it, the turn of events? Almost like a domino effect!

One lightly wonders then, what if St. John the Baptist were to not point his disciples to JESUS! Well, God would bring those very disciples to Christ anyhow! But the greatness of the man is measured in his humility and how true this holds here! “I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.” Ps 40:10 – Active and lived words of the Bible through John the Baptist, that day. On a parting note: How blessed and privileged are we, who are called as members of the same church of Christ; where St. John Baptist, St. Andrew, and St Peter belong! – A profound, soul-churning, and deeply strengthening thought! Words fail here! Praise GOD! Amen!
