Ordinary Weekday
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135
Alleluia: Matthew 5: 16
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16
First Reading: Second Corinthians 1: 18-22
18 But God is faithful, for our preaching which was to you, was not, It is, and It is not.
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ who was preached among you by us, by me, and Sylvanus, and Timothy, was not, It is and It is not, but, It is, was in him.
20 For all the promises of God are in him, It is; therefore also by him, amen to God, unto our glory.
21 Now he that confirmeth us with you in Christ, and that hath anointed us, is God:
22 Who also hath sealed us, and given the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 119: 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135
R. (135a) Lord, let your face shine on me.
129 PHE. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore my soul hath sought them.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
130 The declaration of thy words giveth light: and giveth understanding to little ones.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
131 I opened my mouth and panted: because I longed for thy commandments.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
132 Look thou upon me, and have mercy on me, according to the judgment of them that love thy name.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
133 Direct my steps according to thy word: and let no iniquity have dominion over me.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and teach me thy justifications.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
Alleluia: Matthew 5: 16
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
16 Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Matthew 5: 13-16
13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness gives strength to the life of discipleship. In Jesus Christ, every promise of God finds its sure “yes,” and the Holy Spirit seals that promise within us. We are not left to create our own light or depend on our own consistency. God establishes us in Christ and gives us his Spirit as a pledge of his presence.
The psalm shows how this grace becomes a desire for God’s word: “Direct my steps according to thy word.” The word enlightens the humble heart and keeps sin from ruling over it. Then Jesus speaks of salt and light. A disciple’s life is meant to preserve what is good, bring clarity, and make the goodness of God visible. Our good works are never a performance for human praise; they are signs that lead others to glorify the Father. Faith becomes credible when it is carried into ordinary choices, truthful speech, mercy, fidelity, and service. We can ask God today to let his face shine upon us, so that the light we share is truly his.
Prayer
Faithful God, thank you for confirming us in Christ and placing the pledge of your Spirit within our hearts. Let your face shine upon me and teach me to receive your word with a willing spirit. Direct my steps, keep sin from ruling my life, and preserve in me the savour of faithful love. May my words and actions bring light rather than confusion, encouragement rather than discouragement. Make my daily conduct a quiet witness to your goodness, so that those who encounter me may be led to glorify you, our heavenly Father. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
