Ordinary Weekday
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 98: 1, 2b, 3ab, 3cd-4
Alleluia: Psalms 119: 105
Gospel: Matthew 5: 38-42
First Reading: Second Corinthians 6: 1-10
1 And we helping do exhort you, that you receive not the grace of God in vain.
2 For he saith: In an accepted time have I heard thee; and in the day of salvation have I helped thee. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
3 Giving no offence to any man, that our ministry be not blamed:
4 But in all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in necessities, in distresses,
5 In stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings,
6 In chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned,
7 In the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left;
8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet known;
9 As dying, and behold we live; as chastised, and not killed;
10 As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as needy, yet enriching many; as having nothing, and possessing all things.

Gospel: Matthew 5: 38-42
38 You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:
40 And if a man will contend with thee in judgment, and take away thy coat, let go thy cloak also unto him.
41 And whosoever will force thee one mile, go with him other two,
42 Give to him that asketh of thee and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.
Reflection
“Now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation.” God’s grace is not meant to remain an idea we admire from a distance. It becomes visible in the way we live, especially when patience, truth, charity, and gentleness are tested. The apostolic witness speaks of suffering without surrendering to bitterness: sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; possessing little, yet enriching many. Such a life makes God’s salvation known, as the psalm proclaims, to the ends of the earth.
Jesus gives this grace a demanding shape. When faced with insult, injustice, pressure, or need, his disciples are not to be governed by retaliation or self-protection. Turning the other cheek, giving more than demanded, and remaining open-handed toward those who ask reveal a freedom the world does not easily understand. This is not weakness or approval of evil; it is the strength to refuse its pattern. God’s word is a lamp for this path, showing us what love looks like in the next concrete encounter. The acceptable time is already here: grace can be received today through one patient answer, one generous act, and one decision not to return harm for harm.
Prayer
Lord God, your mercy and salvation have been made known to us in Christ. Keep us from receiving your grace in vain. When we are insulted, treated unfairly, or asked to give more than seems reasonable, shine your word upon our path. Give us courage to resist the desire for revenge, patience that does not become coldness, and charity that remains sincere. Make our lives a quiet witness to your power, especially in hardship. Teach us to be generous without seeking recognition and faithful in the grace offered today. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
