First Reading: Second Corinthians 3: 4-11

4 And such confidence we have, through Christ, towards God.

5 Not that we are sufficient to think any thing of ourselves, as of ourselves: but our sufficiency is from God.

6 Who also hath made us fit ministers of the new testament, not in the letter, but in the spirit. For the letter killeth, but the spirit quickeneth.

7 Now if the ministration of death, engraven with letters upon stones, was glorious; so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses, for the glory of his countenance, which is made void:

8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather in glory?

9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more the ministration of justice aboundeth in glory.

10 For even that which was glorious in this part was not glorified, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is in glory.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 99: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

R. (9c) Holy is the Lord our God.

5 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and adore his footstool, for it is holy.

R. Holy is the Lord our God.

6 Moses and Aaron among his priests: and Samuel among them that call upon his name. They called upon the Lord, and he heard them:

R. Holy is the Lord our God.

7 He spoke to them in the pillar of the cloud. They kept his testimonies, and the commandment which he gave them.

R. Holy is the Lord our God.

8 Thou didst hear them, O Lord our God: thou wast a merciful God to them, and taking vengeance on all their inventions.

R. Holy is the Lord our God.

9 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and adore at his holy mountain: for the Lord our God is holy.

R. Holy is the Lord our God.

Alleluia: Psalms 25: 4b, 5a

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

4b, 5a Teach me your paths, my God, and guide me in your truth.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Matthew 5: 17-19

17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Reflection

Christ does not set aside God’s law; he brings it to fulfillment. The commandments reveal the holiness of the Lord, and Jesus shows that obedience is not a burden imposed from outside, but a way of living in communion with God. His words also remind us that even the smallest commandment matters when it expresses love for the One who gave it.

Yet the first reading tells us that we cannot live this calling by our own strength. Our sufficiency comes from God, who makes us ministers of a new covenant, giving life through the Spirit. The Lord who spoke to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel is still mercifully guiding those who seek his truth. We need both reverence for God’s commands and humility about our ability to fulfill them. We can ask the Holy Spirit to move the law from written words into the choices we make, the way we speak, and the example we offer. To “do and teach” means that our faith should become visible in faithful living, especially in the small matters we might otherwise dismiss.

Prayer

Holy Lord our God, teach me your paths and guide me in your truth. Give me reverence for your commandments and a heart willing to receive their life-giving wisdom. Through the grace of Christ, free me from relying on my own strength. Send your Holy Spirit to write your law more deeply within me, so that my words, choices, and example may faithfully reflect your goodness. When I am weak or careless, correct me with mercy and restore me to obedience. May my life help others recognize the beauty of following you. Amen.
