Alleluia: Matthew 5: 12a
Gospel: Matthew 5: 1-12
First Reading: Second Corinthians 1: 1-7
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother: to the church of God that is at Corinth, with all the saints that are in all Achaia:
2 Grace unto you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation; that we also may be able to comfort them who are in all distress, by the exhortation wherewith we also are exhorted by God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us: so also by Christ doth our comfort abound.
6 Now whether we be in tribulation, it is for your exhortation and salvation: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation: or whether we be exhorted, it is for your exhortation and salvation, which worketh the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.
7 That our hope for you may be steadfast: knowing that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so shall you be also of the consolation.

Gospel: Matthew 5: 1-12
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came unto him.
2 And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
5 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.
10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:
12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
Reflection
Jesus calls blessed those whom the world might overlook: the poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, the merciful, and those who suffer for justice. Their blessedness does not come from suffering itself, as though pain were good, but from the kingdom, consolation, mercy, and lasting reward that God promises. The Lord is near to those who cry out to him, and his goodness can be tasted even in the midst of trouble.
Paul shows how this consolation moves through the Body of Christ. God comforts us in our trials so that we may comfort others with the comfort we have received. Our hardships, united to the sufferings of Christ, need not close us in upon ourselves. They can deepen compassion, strengthen hope, and make us more faithful in mercy and peacemaking. The Beatitudes give us a way to live: to seek justice, keep our hearts clean, offer mercy, and remain steadfast when faith brings opposition. In this life, we may share Christ’s sufferings; in him, we also share his consolation and hope.
Prayer
Father of mercies and God of all comfort, hear us when we are poor, burdened, or troubled. Give us the humility to depend upon you and the trust to recognize your goodness. Form in us a clean heart that seeks justice, practices mercy, and makes peace. When we suffer for what is right, keep our hope steadfast in Christ and strengthen us to remain faithful. May the consolation we receive from you become a gift for those who are in distress. Teach us to rejoice in your promises and to live as children of your kingdom. Amen.
